I used to have a Sigma 10-20mm when I had a 30D, so tried the 12-24mm when I moved to full frame, but -it was soft in the corners, so I swapped it for a Canon 17-40mm f4. Not my best lens, but perfectly usable.

Outstanding. I think most people don't realize how hard it is to get shots like that. One of the most difficult photographic genre to master.

i heard the 12-24 II is much improved, no longer soft in the corners. I used to have a 17-40, the sharpness (ok, if you don't pixel peep) is amazing. fastest ever focussing lens. ever. but it has such immense depth of field to explain the phenomenons. but very hard to make work. it shows nothing but foreground! perfect for tricking auckland house buyers into how much lawn the house has, how huge the 3m lounge could have been, but other than that hard to make work for landscapes apart from shooting the milky way, and the unexpectedly large building with nowhere to back up to compose.

here i wished i had the 17-40 but then who knows what it would distort (or show - certainly don't want the grass at the bottom right). even at 24mm it could well be the best the tight space would allow for, but, i'm no pro ... who knows. happy with 24mm here. note corrected the horizon and didn't know how to fill the gaps. oops

Some very talented photographers and amazing photographs in this thread. I'm no photographer and my camera is only a Canon SX50 HS so I'm not going to embarrass myself by uploading any photos here!

Any camera could have taken most of the pics here bar the macros and action telephotos.

At non mural sizes any camera at iso 100 - 400 will produce good pictures at 560 pixels across :)

Maybe not stunning, but great ones.

I'll second that. I love both the RileyB bike shots and his landscapes. Super sharp, nicely composed, and great timing. I was thinking the motorcyclist was leaning further over on his lap of honour, than I ever did when trying my best... Then I saw the shots of them racing. It makes me think Scotty in Star Trek was wrong when he said:

'I cannae change the laws of physics captain!'

Daniel Murry (SouthNZ) was one of my very first flickr contacts in 2007. I see he has upgraded to a Nikon D800 now, but if you check his stream, he was consistently uploading outstanding landscapes taken with a Canon 350D (Rebel) and 'I think' a kit lens. This page dates back to his 350D days, although a lot of the images were taken with a Sony compact (DSC-P8).

To be fair, the D800 images are clearly nicer, but he still took a lot of outstanding pictures on low end kit.

Spending a few days in Big Bay (Awhitu Peninsula) doing pretty much nothing except swim and take photographs. I might have a look at what I've taken when we get back. Didn't bring a computer to view the results.

What you can do on a basic slr though that you can't do on basic point and shoot ... Is post process the raw file. No matter how advanced the hardware in a camera to convert electrical signals into colours and contrast it will never make a work of art. Only humans can ... That's why you can't get stunning images from a basic p+s. But great shots of still things and low iso is more than possible.
