processing RAW takes years to master :D

I've seen oodles of people buy SLRs to take better pictures and end up using their iphones and their SLR rots in the corner buried in dust

Really? Wonder if they'd donate it to me? ;-)

they won't donate to me :(

the point is, some p+s has amazing face identification autofocus and pretty good image processing hardware, whereas SLRs have piddly 9 points of focus points (the average consumer don't realise that - we're not talking about geeks who flash their androids here, but normal humans who can't understand how to use the android let alone flash it) and pretty hopeless image processing out of the box in difficult situations. the new Nikon SLRs might have changed things on that front, but I find Canon SLR digics give pretty bland pictures out of the box, with either purple or green colour casts - it's usually one or the other!

I've never seen these before, but I didn't have to try very hard to find some pretty good pictures taken by basic point and shoot

none of them would be particularly stunning when you see it on a big screen, but some of them are pretty good.

it's all about composition and lighting, really. and knowing the capabilities of your equipment.

I think I'm going to have to read some books and maybe do a course or two (primarily on how to convince SWMBO that I need to spend hideous amounts of money on a new hobby!)

I have a buddy at the camera club (which must mean he is keen on photography).  He lives in a lovely big house with a beautiful garden, and drives a nice car, but he is not allowed to spend on his photography.  His SHMBO _really_ HTBO cry

Just about any camera can take a picture that when resized to the tiny max width of this sight, will look as sharp as a tak.

Goodness, that is _close_, and surprisingly good DoF.  Was it a single exposure?
