You can see the occasional vertical beam and faint green glow, last night was KP5 in strength which is about the lowest that will get me out in the middle of night photos :P I've been out during a KP6-7 which was quite visible to the naked eye as long as you're away from light pollution.

ah. so kp 5+ and you go out;

do you shoot and hope, or do you wait for faint beams, and how long between faint beams?

I'm not big on how they work, but they tend to spike and move around. I normally shoot 20-30 second exposures and always get something in the shot. I know some people who stay out for hours watching live Aurora weather sensors waiting for big spikes.

There a several factors to the strength of them and with a bit of know how you can watch the sensors and see spikes coming
