Krishant007: Might be a good idea to check out some desktops actually - you would get a lot more power from a 1000 desktop then a laptop. Any reason you are not considering a desktop?

Probably not a silly idea (since we already have the monitor/keyboard setup) but the Lightroom courses I'm looking at say to bring a laptop with LR installed.
Would be convenient if it was a portable option.

I'm sure it won't have great battery life, it also will be plastically, but it will be fast enough and reaches your price point. When you're better and more advanced at lightroom you will realise you will need to upgrade to a machine that has a better display and better performance (and you will need to pay at least double the price).

$1000 won't get you far, but this laptop will get you into the classroom.

ya that looks like a decent option in that case for a laptop. I didnt realise its for a class. In that case, yes a laptop would be the way to go and the Toshiba suggested does seem to be a pretty viable option. But the suggestion for ex gaming laptops is also a great one! Some of these machines are really powerful and would be able to more than handle anything you throw at them

esawers: Can anyone recommend a laptop for using Lightroom? (it will be used in a home office, some downloading, basic kids games, browsing)
We have an oldish Toshiba currently, which is running Lightroom well but could do with an upgrade! We hide the laptop under the desk and use an external monitor with wireless keyboard and mouse (but we like the portability).

I keep leaning towards Macbooks, but to be honest I'm a Windows gal.

Budget: Can't justify more than $1000 (second hand is also ok)

Most newish laptops will be able to run Lightroom. Lightroom is not that resource intensive on the PC, not like video editing or high spec gaming. For CPU you could go as low as i3 and it will still run fine but of course if you want it to be faster i5 or i7.

4GB of ram as a minimum, the more the better.

SSD's if you want it to perform really fast but not essential for Lightroom.

Actually from memory I loaded Lightroom on my Toshiba laptop for a project, which is i3 and at the time had 4GB of ram and it worked fine.

Not for serious image processing/editing with Atom processor. I'm pretty sure it will choke on processor intensive tasks (raw file conversion etc.) It's incredibly frustrating using sliders etc in image editing software which don't reflect changes made on screen almost instantly.

Surface Pro perhaps - but even then I'd suggest Core i7 upgrade option. Better still would be something with quad-core i7. Please pass back to MS head office to make a surface device with larger screen, faster CPU options.

This is a 4 core i7 with HT rendering a 36 megapixel 14 bit raw file:

LR6 runs fine on my Surface 3.

This screen resolution is horrible. Only get full hd resolution.

With all due respect, if you have used Lightroom, you will understand that the interface has 5 mini windows. Photo in the middle flanked by a workspace at the top the left the right and below. These workspaces take up specified pixels. Then i don't know what is left for the picture editing in the middle.
