Cheers to all once again. On the A6000 path, would the A6000 Twin Lens Kit and a SEL50F18 (or more cost effective 3rd party, if I can find one to suit) would be an okay hobby set?

Not sure. Google comparisons. I'd specifically compare them to the tamron 18-270 and the sigma 18-250. I've used them and they are very good for the range they provide.

But you must also look at autofocus ability on the Sony body, and other things apart from picture quality.

Thanks joker97. I was hoping to pick something up in the Queen's Birthday sales, but I think the research is going to take longer than that!

Need to find some other options to compare with the A6000 now.

Something to think about if travelling is batteries...whilst a lot of "travel" cameras have the ability to use AA or similarly easy-to-find batteries, many do not and the battery dying as the "ultimate photo opportunity" comes along is infinitely frustrating.

Either het a camera that can take disposable batteries at a pinch, or get a couple of batteries...and keep them charged.

If you google 'e mount compatible lenses' you get some quite interesting stuff - the first 'the wirecutter' article looked promising on a skim through.

Personally your twin lens kit plus 50mm looked fine to me as a start, though should point out that Joker97 obviously knows a lot more about this stuff than I do, I just don't have the money to graduate to the finer models in the lens / camera world.

And being an APS-C camera the 50mm lens is equivalent to a 75mm on a full frame camera anyway (multiplying by 1.5, as for the kit lenses as well, as I'm sure you know).

If you're in the mood you can probably find out a lot of stuff over the weekend before the sales finish. Or you can take you time (personally if there's one thing I'm good at, it prevarication), you'll be in time for the next sale and have some new models to think about anyway.........

Really recommend you consider using a company camera. Check out this size comparison between the A6000 with a 28-70 lens and the RX100. The RX100 will fit into a jeans pocket (front or rear), coat pocket, etc. With an A6000 and two you will need a dedicated camera bag, which is a pain to carry, a pain to store in the hotel safe (if you have one), annoying to have on a plane, and marks you as a target for thieves.

Photos are important to me (as you probably know I'm a professiona), as I said earlier I just take the RX100 these days. Some times I just use my phone, and I've gotten some pretty awesome photos with it and Snapseed processing - easier than Photoshop tbh. I rarely take the D700 anywhere I'm not paid too.

As for comparisons for similar cameras to A6000. When I was looking at that one for myself, I compared it with an Olympus OMD M10, Panasonic GX7 and Fuji X-T1. The Fuji is quite a different camera (read Pricey) and has been getting really good reviews. I went with the OMD M10 after much deliberation.

No love for the Fuji in this thread?

I bought my X-T1 as a replacement for my Nikon D90 and haven't looked back. Brilliant camera - love the XTrans images - and Fuji are demonstrating real commitment to building a world class suite of glass for the XF mount cameras - much more so than Sony and their lacklustre portfolio of mirrorless lenses. They have also continually developed and improved the device since release with a series of firmware updates that offer genuine functional improvement rather than bug fixes. Most impressive.

Now the X-T1 may be a little on the pricey side for your needs - but! The X-T10 is due out any day now and represents all that is good about the X-T1 (save a small compromise on the EVF) in a much smaller and cheaper package.

Stick a pancake on it and you have a super small and light travel camera. Want to get serious and it will run any of the excellent, pro-grade XF Fuji lenses - all bases covered.

I only know Canon lenses and bodies. So i know nothing about Sonys. But I've heard good things. It's a minefield out there with cameras. So many choices.

IMO detachable lenses are just more to carry around. I took an SLR to Europe with a bunch of lenses and it was really just a huge pain. Hence for a travel camera I'll be going fixed lens.

All I'm saying is, if you want a travel camera, buy a travel camera. Don't end up with one that's actually not that convenient to take out and use.
