In the NZIPP professional photography awards they pretty much turned into Photoshop awards, to the point they had to introduce "classic" categories. That's around the time I gave up the NZIPP.

So long as an image is pleasing I don't see any problem with processing.

I visited the NZIPP in Wellington the past week.  Maybe I just not that artistic person.  Yes they have classic category and creative category.  Most of the images were portraiture / weddings probably that pro's do that line of work.  The lesser edited work were the category of travel / documentary (journalism) probably they have to abide by the documentary rules which may be different to portraiture.

You're in the line of portraiture / weddings.  Those award images that they pro's submitted are they what their customers actually requested or paid for or they are done just for the pursuit of the award? Things like a person standing by the wall and looking with this feeling or the bride holding a cigarette or the bride and groom that the groom's head is not there.

Lastly, I only stood there for a few minutes at the judging room. In the judging room do we see prints they submitted which wasn't awarded a bronze or higher?  Or are they shortlisted so we only see the awarded prints?

TBH mainly because very few landscape shooters bother with NZIPP, it adds nothing for them commercially. NZIPP is all about portrait and wedding, even for advertising theres a better alternative body (AIPA)

Several things annoy me about the NZIPP IRIS awards but I wont go into that here.. apart from that many of their wining images are heavily processed but poorly shot. I always like to think you should start off with a decent image in the first place...

My own shots I process - its part of the whole, how much depends on the image itself and what I want out of it. Some (most) get basic raw tweaks, others get a lot more, but far less than a lot of others I know!

You'll do really well in the NZIPP iris awards with landscapes, but only if they are black and white, and you put random nonsensical objects into your images :P

When I was an student, we had several classes on "IRISing up" our images before submitting, that basically meant taking perfectly good photos and photoshopping the s!%t out of them until they were barely recognisable as an photo anymore. Needless to say, the more you "IRISed" them up the better score you got in the IRIS awards.
