When you talk about iso performance I find it best to think in terms of a final print, not what the file looks like at 100%. In that case a 20MP P&S and a 6MP P&S released about the same time would give similar results for say an 8x12" print. The only real advantage of more MP is the ability to crop, with the downside of bigger files that don't really have more information.

Yes, but as you crop you gradually get closer to viewing at 100%, and then admittedly there is some validity in the argument that more pixels correlates to more noise.
I agree entirely that generally the end result on media is what really matters though.
