Handsomedan: Something to think about if travelling is batteries...whilst a lot of "travel" cameras have the ability to use AA or similarly easy-to-find batteries, many do not and the battery dying as the "ultimate photo opportunity" comes along is infinitely frustrating.

Either het a camera that can take disposable batteries at a pinch, or get a couple of batteries...and keep them charged.

A cameras are pretty rare now aren't they? A universal USB charger, one of those power banks with a decent battery, there are plenty of solutions now. I've never gotten close to running out the RX100 battery, I don't have a clue how long it lasts. Longer than it takes to fill up a 32B card.

+1 on Sony RX100. I bought the MK1 mid last year and it is absolutely impressive in all regards. Doesn't seem that the later iterations are massively better in any features (just minor upgrades) so saved a few $$ by going for the MK1. Very portable and that is the main reason why it is so good.

timmmay: Really recommend you consider using a company camera. Check out this size comparison between the A6000 with a 28-70 lens and the RX100. The RX100 will fit into a jeans pocket (front or rear), coat pocket, etc. With an A6000 and two you will need a dedicated camera bag, which is a pain to carry, a pain to store in the hotel safe (if you have one), annoying to have on a plane, and marks you as a target for thieves.

Photos are important to me (as you probably know I'm a professiona), as I said earlier I just take the RX100 these days. Some times I just use my phone, and I've gotten some pretty awesome photos with it and Snapseed processing - easier than Photoshop tbh. I rarely take the D700 anywhere I'm not paid too.

That really is a small camera with heaps of punch. I'm a little concerned it'll be too small for me in terms of comfort in the hand during use. I haven't discounted it though, and it's on the list.

I am honestly leaning towards a small mirrorless (but a little bigger than the RX100), with the thought I'd travel with one, maybe two lenses, but when at home I can carry more lenses and have some fun. I don't really want to be having one for travel, and one to play around with. This is currently still being mulled over, of course.

I really must have an EVF, and this is covered in many options put forward so far, thanks.

In terms of pocketability, I usually wear cargo pants/shorts or have a satchel with me when I'm travelling, so I'm thinking there won't be too much of an issue carrying a mirrorless with one lens. Again, still contemplating this option!

You won't be able to put a mirrorless camera in one pocket and a lens in the other. They're heavy and awkward, you'll be walking like you have three testicles, plus you don't want to shake them around. The camera then needs to be assembled before use. Satchel will let you walk more normally, but it's easier to steal.

RX100 is fine in the hand. It's like using a phone. I think the V2 or V3 has an optional viewfinder. My v1 doesn't, works fine, and I'm used to full frame SLRs.

If you're on a holiday to take photos, sure take a bigger camera, but if you want to take photos while on holiday small and easily transported is really super important in my experience. If you buy the wrong one you can sell it for maybe a 30% loss, so not a huge problem really.

I meant camera with lens attached into one pocket. Wouldn't be a superzoom lens of course.

I meant camera with lens attached into one pocket. Wouldn't be a superzoom lens of course.

How big are your pockets? The RX100 is as big as I can fit in my pockets, maybe slightly more. In practice you'll need to carry a bag if you have anything that won't fit in your pocket, maybe a padded camera bag.

I've been carrying my SX50 HS in a padded case inside a satchel. I guess the Canon is a little bigger than the Sony A6000 with a SAL50F18 lens attached.

The RX100 III doesn't seem so small I guess. The lack of optical zoom ability is what I guess bothers me with it. It's not always possible to stand closer! ;-)
