Why do you need both? What do you want to get out of your travel camera?

I don't need both, but one can never have too many toys! ;-)

As touched on waaay back, I also want to get more into photography as a hobby. That's the 'etc' but in the topic. I've started with the SX50 HS and want something more.

The RX100 III seems to be a brilliant machine indeed, but I'm not sure it'll do everything I may want it to do, especially down the line.

I don't want the bulk of a large camera though, so the mirrorless interchangeable lens options seem to be the go?

When I'm on holiday taking in the tourist sites, I won't be walking around with a camera in my pocket just in case it's needed, it'll be around my neck at the ready. I can't remember the last time I went away and didn't have either a satchel or backpack with me, so there will always be somewhere to safely stow the camera if required. With something the size of (for example) the Sony A6000 with the 16-50mm kit lens, it'll slip into a pocket in cargo shorts or pants at a pinch I'm sure.

I'm picking kit lenses will be better than any camera I've had before and I can always buy more as I learn. Hopefully I'm right!

The information supplied in this thread and others has certainly been rather helpful in answering some questions, and the input and assistance has been most appreciated. Cheers all.

with your intentions in mind i did a quick search of upgrade paths (lenses) for the a6000. turns out all their lenses are expensive and pretty average. sorry to poop on the party but this body won't get you very far. neither does it have any advantage over its nikon/canon competitors. what does nikon offer with aps-c mirrorless? (just thinking out loud)

edit: i say that because lens options for aps-c nikon/canon are endless and lots of 2nd hand cheap options everywhere

edit edit: only prob is last i checked them their mirrorless offers are in their infancy in terms of camera performance

or stick with the RX100 - i know nothing about that one but you don't have to be stuck with no upgrade path because hopefully you won't plan to upgrade lenses on that

Cheers. All good. I'm looking at other options at the moment. Even if I have to pay a little more up front to access cheaper/better lenses later I guess. The budget has been expanded slightly (but not too much) so hopefully that helps.

Understood. Also looking at Olympus and maybe Fujifilm and perhaps Panasonic.

Thanks again.

If want a compact interchangeable lens system go for micro 4/3. Olympus make good 4/3 cameras, but read the reviews at dpreview for good information.

Thanks, a good range of lenses available for micro four thirds. The Olympus OM-D E-M10 seems to be at a good price point.

In saying that, it seems with adapter rings the Sony can use a fair few more lenses? Am i better off forgetting the use of adapters for now and just think of what is natively available?

Forget adapters IMHO, they're a PITA. How many lenses do you really need? I only have four lenses in my professional kit, plus extension tubes. Not sure if M4/3 has lenses that go very wide yet.

You're right, I'll only need a couple of lenses, maybe 3 at most.

I guess in the bang for not too much buck arena, the options are the Olympus OM-D E-M10 or A6000?

yes adaptors - more hassle than it's worth. sometimes you also lose function like - poor or complete lack of autofocus or exposure metering for example.

in terms of how many lenses do you need - that's harder. there are people on GZ who have about 3+ flagship phones at one time!
as an efficient pro you have learnt to cover 99% of situations with 2 big mama zoom lenses to please clients and get paid.
an enthuasist with bottomless pocket might have 10 lenses they don't know how to use properly ;p
so that is moot really.

if the OP wants proper PQ when he plays with pictures then he should do this
- get a good travel camera now
- get an enthuasist kit later.

the enthusist kit - he has 3 options
- micro 4/3 - smaller (lighter) but in the long run costs more than option 2, with more or less the same PQ as option 2
- option 2 - APS-C Nikon/Canon - as i said heaps of options 2nd hand or new, 2nd hand usually very very cheap and you can sell with no or little loss when bored. but bigger
- Full Frame - if he has bottomless pockets then go this way but i doubt anyone starting out would go this way unless they have a crystal ball. VERY expensive.

I suggest you choose based on the system you want to be with, plus how the cameras feel in your hand (if you get to play with them). They get identical scores on dpreview, both gold/80%.

bang for buck - Nikon/Canon APS-C. due to floods of 2nd hand options. usually people who are upgrading APS-C, upgrading to Full Frame, moving to micro 4/3 :D

edit: and dare i say it mving from canon -> Nikon/Sony! so bang for buck final answer = canon!
