I don't need both, but one can never have too many toys! ;-)
As touched on waaay back, I also want to get more into photography as a hobby. That's the 'etc' but in the topic. I've started with the SX50 HS and want something more.
The RX100 III seems to be a brilliant machine indeed, but I'm not sure it'll do everything I may want it to do, especially down the line.
I don't want the bulk of a large camera though, so the mirrorless interchangeable lens options seem to be the go?
When I'm on holiday taking in the tourist sites, I won't be walking around with a camera in my pocket just in case it's needed, it'll be around my neck at the ready. I can't remember the last time I went away and didn't have either a satchel or backpack with me, so there will always be somewhere to safely stow the camera if required. With something the size of (for example) the Sony A6000 with the 16-50mm kit lens, it'll slip into a pocket in cargo shorts or pants at a pinch I'm sure.
I'm picking kit lenses will be better than any camera I've had before and I can always buy more as I learn. Hopefully I'm right!
The information supplied in this thread and others has certainly been rather helpful in answering some questions, and the input and assistance has been most appreciated. Cheers all.

joker97: with your intentions in mind i did a quick search of upgrade paths (lenses) for the a6000. turns out all their lenses are expensive and pretty average. sorry to poop on the party but this body won't get you very far. neither does it have any advantage over its nikon/canon competitors. what does nikon offer with aps-c mirrorless? (just thinking out loud)

Stu: You're right, I'll only need a couple of lenses, maybe 3 at most.
I guess in the bang for not too much buck arena, the options are the Olympus OM-D E-M10 or A6000?
