This Helix Nebula image was not actually taken over one day so strictly it's not shot today but it was over the last few weeks. It was taken at 1600mm focal length on a Meade 10" telescope with a Losmandy G11 mount to track the object. The exposures were taken over several nights on a SBIG ST2000 mono camera with colour filter wheels. The individual exposures were a large number of images. Approx x20 red, x20 green, x10 blue, x10 clear and x8 Hydrogen Alpha. They were combined in MaximDL and then stretched and enhanced in Photoshop CS3

Awesome shot :)

Did you have to use a guiding scope as well? or is your mount accurate enough?

At 1600mm almost no mount is good enough to take unguided images. The SBIG ST2000 camera I use actually has two CCD sensors, one to take the long exposer image and one to look at a guide star every two seconds and send corrections to the tracking mount to keep it on target. BTW I didn't say before those RGB L Ha images apart from being a lot of them here are the exposure times for each individual image in minutes!

for example
x20 red @ 4 min

20x R 4 min
20x G 2 min
10x B 2 min
10x Clear 8 min
8x Ha     8 min

284 minutes

So this is actually a total of four hours 44 minutes hours of exposure time!

Shot at Auckland Zoo

Photo shot at home yesterday using Canon EOS 60D & EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens - ISO 125 - F/4 in TV Mode at 1/250 sec to freeze the motion of the rain drops and the flight of the bird.
