Thanks guys. I'm going to try and get into a camera shop or two today, just to add to the confusion while getting some hands-on with the options.

This was the exact same thought process that made me go from the A6000 to the OMD M10. The M10 is actually quite nice and pocketable - the 14-42mm lens that comes with the camera is almost the size of a pancake lens. So do consider this camera quite seriously.

Also, if your budget allows, have a look at the OMD M5 Mk2. This is quite a new release into the market and has other benefits such as weatherproof. While I Have been ok to use my M10 in various conditions, I dont think I would bring it out in the rain. It has a better image stabiliser system as well.

Having said that, the M10 is no slouch either. It has given me quite good performance.

Well that changed everything. The M10 wasn't comfortable to hold. The A6000 was better to hold, but something was off (sorry Sony).

Thanks to the guys at Progear in Newmarket (especially Ben), I've come away with an Olympus OM-D M1. Not exactly according to plan, but I'm not complaining!

How is the OMD M1? I have heard that thing is pretty awesome! Great camera and great purchase.. If you are looking at lenses, I am going to recommend an Olympus 17mm F1.8. Just bought one for me - pretty good lens. I do a bit of street photography. The lens is 35mm equivalent of a full frame. Fits quite a bit in the frame actually - makes for nice indoor photos as well as outdoors.

It's a really nice camera. Because I'm new to this game, I've obviously got quite a lot to learn. I have a few books that I'll work through, including one that is especially written for the E-M1 and all of it's tricks. The auto settings seem to do a great job, so I'm starting there and working my way through!

I actually plan on getting the 17mm F1.8 at some stage. I read good things. Keeping my eye open for a good price. I do have a 17mm F2.8 i picked up at a pretty good price, and it will do for now.

I have a 12-50mm F3.5-6.3 and 40-150mm F4-5.6, and am thinking of getting a 15mm Body Cap Lens, just because. Once I get used to the camera (and have recovered from the initial expense) I'll have a look at upgrading a lens or two.

Just to add my thoughts and a problem no reasonable solution has presented itself yet.

I went from a Nikon DSLR (APS frame size) to a Sony NEX-5N mirrorless camera.

While I like the compact size of the Sony and I have two lenses, I still don't find I take optimal photos (it could be me of course) with it because of the difficulty in framing and holding the camera away from the body. I would love an EV but the Sony EV is over US$250 and that's not a good deal by any stretch of the imagination.

Are there any mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses that also have EV's or even rangefinder type eye-level viewfinders?  That would pique my interest.

The EVF on the E-M1 is rather good. Not a bad LCD screen, but I like a VF. I think all of the OM-D models have an EVF.

Nice camera but it's really pricey.  On my last trip I didn't even take my Sony but instead took a compact camera  (Samsung) with optical zoom.  It did all I wanted as most of the time I wanted to take video not stills. My wife seemed to think taking stills with her iPhone 6 was good enough but I don't think so.

The E-1M1 looks like it would solve my problems and the reviews suggest that the 4/3 imager hardly gives an any quality over the larger APS-C format imager but I cannot justify the cost at this time.

I've been reading through this as I've just started thinking about replacing a Sony DSC-H3 that I've had for about seven years now.  It's a very basic Cybershot camera that's travelled all over and served me well enough, but I want to get back into some more serious amateur photography without breaking the bank.

A number of people in this thread have mentioned the Sony RX100s and the a6000, but I wondered if anyone has looked at the a5000?  The standard Sony price is $850 including a 16-50mm lens but I can find parallel importers offering it with a second 55-210mm lens all for under $800.  It takes any E-mount lens and with the 16-50mm attached it would fit in a large pocket (e.g. a jacket or cargo pants  but not in your jeans - unless you wear them loose!).  Most reviews I can find rate it very highly.  The only negative comments seem to be that it doesn't have an optical viewfinder and it doesn't have a hot shoe, etc. to add external flash or other accessories.

I did have a look at this (but didnt consider it for me). The image quality is quite good of this as well. But I think for those looking at getting into photography, the lack of viewfinder would be a deal breaker (as was the case for me).

That looks interesting. I also discovered the Sony NEX-6 which is a potential option also.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Sony are moving away from the NEX nomenclature and just going with the Alpha branding now, e.g. the a5000 I have been looking at is apparently the replacement for the NEX-3.  This means if you can find some NEX models you're interested in, they should be discounted and, if not, it's worth asking!

I have the NEX-F3 but miss a EVF over the DSLR I replaced it with and the EV accessory is way too expensive. Better to just get a new camera and sell the old one.
