I have two big DSLRs, half a dozen lenses that cost about $3K each. Since I gave up professional photography I've used them once or twice. I use my little 5 year old Sony RX100 a lot, as it's a lot better than even my quite good Huawei P9 phone. Better images in low light, faster to take photos, better video, optical image stabilisation, etc. The phone is good for ad hoc stuff though.

I am interested in something that has at least the range of 28-300mm equivalent that can do all that you mentioned + 4k 60fps, even better if 15-600mm equivalent, under 1kg in total. anything like that yet? might have to wait a few years ... nikon d850 sounds like that but it will cost a lot more than 1kg

Nope, not with current lens technology. Wide angles are difficult and require different lens design to telephoto. It can be done but quality is typically not good.

I suspect we'll have flying cars before we have what you want.

Pretty much what I was saying above, in that there's usually a big trade of for zoom lenses that work over a very large range. Tend to be good in the middle, but poor at at least one end of the scale. Think loss of sharpness, colour fringing etc.

I think the weather sealing is an important aspect for a travel device also, as you can't always guarantee perfect weather.

Likewise the ability to charge over standard USB connection would be useful too.

Got some great footage last year swimming with manta rays at Kona and watching lava flow into the water near Hilo.

they're using computers to design d-slr lenses, very sharp, very expensive.

perhaps they will do that to compact cameras, then i can carry 2-3 different lens-body things and still be around 1kg. but might look awkward ....

After contemplating buying an SLR and reading advise from this forum I bought and use my Canon G16 for those special holiday snaps

but use my LG G3 for the more frequent point and shoot.

I have a little blue Panansonic unit. It has some useful pre-set modes like "snorkelling" which work well in those conditions. I had mine down to about 25 feet snorkelling with dolphins and reef-fish and no issues.

How about the Sony RX10 series? Currently on version IV and are insanely good cameras. I've got the III and it takes amazing shots. Range from 24-600mm and does 4k recording plus a whole lot more. Very expensive, and not exactly pocket sized but it's definitely a 1 camera that does all I need it to do and then some.

DPReview seems to think it's pretty good. Sony seems to make pretty good cameras.

Was just gonna mention this. Yes the Mark III has a 600mm lens. Maybe the Mark I didn't. The Mark IV has a 600mm too.

There are also more pocket ones too.

Lumix DC=TZ200. 1" sensor also. 24-360mm. 340g incl batteries.
Larger is the Lumix DMC=FZ2000, 1" sensor 24-480mm. 915g.
Canon G3X. 733g. 1" sensor. 24-600mm.

To all the others:
The F11 online magazine has stopped but I was catching up on editions I have not read. Ok, most are not wildlife, sport or stock or wedding pro's but are more documentary type including exhibitions. A lot of them had very few lenses. Some had the previous 1 or 2 versions. ie Nikon 17-35mm F2.8 which is about a 2002 lens or even a Nikon push pull design 35-70mm F2.8 which might be 30 years old.

Some of them had the 2, 3 or 4 lenses but one just had the single 35mm F1.4. One also had the Fuji XT1 with just the kit zoom lens. One was doing storytelling with just a Nikon D80 (~2006) with a single 10-24. One was doing aerial photography and preferred F4 lenses over F2.8. One was using his nice Nikon D810 or something with a manual Nikon 28mm AIS lens.

For travelling its a phone camera and my trusty Canon S95 point and shoot. If we're going somewhere for the day specifically to take photos the wife pulls out her entry level DSLR from a few years ago (350D I think). If we're swimming or watersports then the GoPro gets a call.

You mean 2003/04 :)

Back then was my first dSLR and when I took up this hobby. I got the Nikon D70.

This photographer has ran many exhibitions and uses a 2006 Nikon D80 with a single Nikon 10-24mm lens.
