I thought long and hard before heading to the UK last month, but in the end, I relented and took a little G1X along with me. As it happens, I took very few pictures with the G1X, but plenty with my iPhone 8 Plus. My biggest issue was that I'd recently installed the Pro Camera app on the iPhone, but I don't know how to drive it. One issue was the HDR setting that kept giving me strange messages about watermarks. I eventually realized that I had to pay another $4.49 in order to use the HDR setting without the watermark. I guess that is cheap enough as it does an excellent job, but I had no idea when I paid for the app, that I was only getting half of it, and had to pay more for the rest.

Recently I played with my Ricoh GR and I used a Nikon SB800 flash and it works in manual. A chinese mid model smaller flash in manual would work quite well. Bounce flash etc .. on holidays for the odd day out.

After enough frustration of what I written, the premium compacts are great when I am just doing snaps. If I was going out for an evening doing something more deliberately I might take a mirrorless than a dSLR.

Even in the film days, people used the interchangeable lens system, the more compact Contax G2 for example. Or some of the premium point and shoots like the Contax T2, Yashica T4 or that 35mm F2.0 or something Olymplus Muji.

Took my Pentax K-3 DSLR recently to Vietnam and the UK. Freaking loved it, that thing is a machine.

Paired with a cheap 35mm plastic prime it was epic. So very glad I took that with me.

Took the kit lens (one thing I really really do want to upgrade) and a longer zoom, but travel wise the 35mm was the go to for me. Nice and small too.

I found interchangeable lenses are at least somewhat useful for that evening to yourself if you have so you a bit of serious photog. Mirrorless are more compact than a dSLR. For walking around yup, the 35mm is really a classic. I've checked my EXIF details with my Lightroom catalog, 35mm is probably the most popular focal length that I used. Fuji X100F is more useful ... and it's quite popular. I just got the Ricoh cos it's even more physically smaller.
