mattwnz: I wouldn't recommend Fantasico, simply because it will often install an old version of wordpress, depending on how good the host is at updating it.

I just found that too !!!!!  Hostgator I got the trial account with is using Fantastico Dulux.... But it will only let me install an ancient version of WP (3.3) from a year ago. There have been three stable versions since.

I think it is manual install time!!!

That is really poor of them, as the the new versions have been released to fix some security issues. But you get what you pay for I guess with cheaper hosts. Hosts that provide softalicious should provide an up to date version of wordpress in their autoinstaller.
With that host, if you read their terms, they only do weekly backups, and if you have more than a certain number of files (inodes they call them) in the account, they won't do any backups. So always make sure you read the fine print.

Squarespace is quite nice, but quite expensive. Also more restrictive on what you can do compared to installing wordpress.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions and ideas both regarding the platform and the host.

Yeah - SqyareSpace is more expensive - and it does add up when you total it over months years.  I am happy with  all three of the big hosts - will decide next month which one I will go with.

I did end up doing a manual install - which took 5 mins to read the instructions and 3 mins to actually do the install - so there was no dramas there.

Will update this thread when the site is ready in a few weeks....

Thanks again everyone!
