In Nth America your job application is basically dismissed if you don't have an accompanying LinkedIn profile. I never had one until I started thinking about leaving NZ for my OE. I've never had a problem with spam, fake job offers, or accessing my contact info. It has always asked me if I want to send a request and never done so on my behalf. I find it very useful and saves a lot of time on job applications.

Yep. I don't know whether this is still the case, but a few years ago it wouldn't let you unsubscribe from emails until you created an account!

I consider LinkedIn to be the facebook of business, you can get as much or as little out as you require. Spam is controllable, i cant remember the last time i received a spam email, it does a good job of regularly emailing me jobs i might like

Where possible and by keeping my professional contacts within LinkedIn if they change jobs or contact details this information is subsequently update and i am still able to contact them if need be, this is great for keeping in touch with job hopping contacts :P

From a job hunting perspective it is invaluable as far as getting a bit of background on people and companies

I read an interesting article once (possibly on LinkedIn :P) of the key benefit of LinkedIn... Normally any contacts made through business effectively become IP of the company and as an employee you are not necessarily entitled to take these with you when you leave, with LinkedIn you technically own that connection so it is yours to keep

I am in supply chain and have worked across 4 industries in the last decade, LinkedIn has been incredibly resourceful in helping me reconnect with suppliers from my previous jobs when needs arise

It seems that if you are advertising youself then use Linkedin but dont bother if you just want to advertise domestic product? Although crude and simplistic would that be fare?

If you want business people to be able to find you and you find business contacts then yes

I've found it useful for networking with groups worldwide in my focus area.

You can treat it like facebook if you want to, but I would find that pretty weird if I was getting lots of random social stuff from contacts personally.

The groups aspect is where it's at for me. I don't check it regularly, but I get email updates in areas I'm interested in.

Especially in you’re B2B selling, LinkedIn is an invaluable too.

Who should you target in an organisation? What’s their background?

Have they previously worked for an existing client of yours etc. etc.

You’re basically trying to extract as much information about an organisation or person, before you target them, so you can make the sales pitch as relevant as possible.
