Devil's advocate here but a fake profile would surely be against the T&Cs of Facebook, wouldn't it?

You want to bank, but don't want to use internet banking, you want to do social media, but you don't want to join facebook (or other).

I get wanting to protect your security and privacy, but you can mitigate these things by being careful.

And ... We're all really big on making this moral stand about how Facebook should (and should not) behave... In return, it's probably not unreasonable for them to expect their users to follow the T&Cs either...

(On a side note IMO you'd find online bullying and intimidation would be less of a problem if "fake users" were eliminated... And to that end I'll always report them when I see them)

But horrendously off-topic and probably worthy of a new thread if we're going to continue with it.

I get what people are saying about the banking and Facebook and so on. Everything in life is a cost/benefit analysis. If the benefit you get from something exceeds the (likely) cost, then there is no good reason not to go for it. But not everyone has the same lifestyle, or the same needs, or the same priorities. My friend and his friends all live on Facebook and they are happy to put up with the various privacy and advertising intrusions that go with that. For them the benefit greatly outweighs the cost and it would not make sense to not make use of Facebook. For me that is not the case. My wish to access my friend's photos is a one-off. It is the only use I would ever make of Facebook. That benefit is not sufficient to make the price worth paying so I am looking for another way. If there isn't one, then so be it.

Like with everything if it works for YOU then sod the rest and do it, if it doesn't then don't do it. In this world there is too many do gooders and not enough doing good.

Wants vs needs. Seem so blurred these days.

I would't bother until they come back, or offer a non FB re-compressed experience. Lots of people use it as a storage and then remove from phones not realising how bad any prints would be and how hard to get the originals (not re-compressed for a 2nd time) back afterward is. When onedrive etc offer live galleries with better thumnailing etc

Me. I normally go on holiday, I enjoy the time there and then. (too cheap to get data)

Come back. Upload pics and let everyone relevant know how it went. ( A cruise is good for this as its off grid) These days, apparently the world ends if you can't find wifi and show it off as it happens.

Much like you use to have to wait to get home to a developer or printer

I’m totally with you on this - I flatly refuse to have anything to do with FB as a matter of principle. I’ve had several people tell me to get it - even insisting that I get WhatsApp because it suits them for me to have it. No way.

However as someone alluded to above, it does sound like you’re wanting to have your cake and eat it too. If you’re that negatively principled on it, maybe you shouldn’t be trying to find a way to access it.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Use Firefox with the Facebook container plugin.

Could they not email you them directly? Facebook photos are horribly compressed, upload to Flickr, Google Photos, anything else?
Hopefully they have a back up of some kind?

Still recommend a fake account for rikkitic, not hurting anyone. Victimless crime. Other than hurting facebook who can't steal all your personal information.

Except Facebook aren't stealing anything - when you sign up and agree to the T&Cs, you're giving Facebook permission to use that information. There aren't any surprises in that at all. I think what people forget is that when you use a free product you need to ask yourself where you fit into that. With Facebook, Facebook isn't the product at all - you the consumer are the product that Facebook is selling and really if you have a problem with that - don't use it.

I don't think so. Facebook have sold peoples personal data to third parties, without their consent. You haven't heard of Cambridge Analytica?

Additionally, facebook using peoples personal data to influence the US elections. There is no reason why they wouldn't do the same in New Zealand.
