Dingbatt:

I wonder how they are going to fill their pages without stories about “something breaking the internet” or “people being outraged about xxx” without Facebook as a source.

I guess there’s still Twitter. But I would have thought it is beset by the same maladies as Facebook.

I was listening to a stuff spokesperson on ZB on the way home from work this evening and they apparently dropped their facebook ads 12 months ago and they operate roughly a dozen facebook accounts which they are going to stop publishing articles with and monitor. The way he explained their reasoning behind it sounded quite honorable and did stress that it was just a trial and its possible they could be back, but if they could still continue to reach new zealanders with with their news articles in other ways they would not be back.

I do hope it works out well for them and they can stay off the platform

short of it is that a lot of companies including conglomerate like Unilever, Ford, Coca-cola are boycotting facebook on their lack of pro activeness to stomp out hate speech and racism

google "facebook boycott" for some interesting reads

I can't help but wonder whether the ruling in Australia that media were liable for comments on posts (hence lots of Aussie media all pulling their stuff from FB last month) had something to do with it as well. Our defamation and hate speech laws do share a lot of similarities.

Suspect this would have been another straw for the camel’s back, yes.

Good on Stuff for this - I hope it works out well for them. The less influence Facebook has the better IMO.

I just paid Stuff a visit for the first time in a very long time and I have to say I am impressed. Site looks good, no obvious clickbait, content that I read was serious and sober in tone. Overall it seems much better than the last time I checked it. I will come back again.

This has actually been the case a little while now. While they still have a bit of a way to go they are far from the worst. That title goes to the NZ Herald these days. They've found the gutter and just want to keep on going lower. Which I find strange given they expect you to pay for it. It'll be interesting to see what direction the new owner(s) takes Stuff now. Hopefully it's towards more articulate and high brow reporting (like they've started to do slowly).

for a long time, Facebook has been happy to Hoover content up from news providers, without even a return in clicks or ad revenue. Great for FB, too bad for the media publisher. They tried to sell news access packages to providers on the grounds of click through traffic, but reality did NOT meet practise. Their argument was they will get the content anyway from independent posting, so you may as well be there.

There are arguments to be made either way on whether FB is nasty or not, but the evidence is on histories side, and that is as ‘defenders’ of free speech, they allow nasty, vile, hate filled trash to not just appear but get traction and gain influence. Great if you are savvy, but as I keep boring people with, so MANY PEOPLE ARE NOT SAVVY.

its been a few years since I was there but I saw first hand what this was doing to Mediaworks, and as much as they attract a tremendous amount of bashing, I always thought they were a good crew and didn’t deserve what was being done to them.

FB is a dead end with zuck in charge, so good on Sinead for her actions, I hope it becomes permanent. The funny thing with network effects is that it happens in reverse too - as quickly as it can grow your customer base, bad action can destroy just as fast.

I don't use facebook, but my partner does .

Just checked her feed now, and most of it consists of mundane postings from friend's.

There are a few ads, uk pensions, ruapehu parking, health insurance, nothing you wouldn't see on TV or the NZ herald.

There are no news items, fake or real.

Why don't we get the fake news and hate speech that other people say they receive?

Google scrapes way more news than our facebook.

GSManiac:

Facebook / Zuckerberg has basically come out saying they don’t care and they won’t change their ways.  The best thing for FB would be to ditch MZ imo.

Zuckerman can issue all the bravado that he wants, and he may be able to play the waiting game a little while considering the cash reserves, but businesses are fundamentally powered by income and without it, they will be forced into a change. Shareholders expect a return....

The question is, who can play chicken the longest.
