Another own goal by Aussie propping up that old man and his crumbling media monopoly. I dont see this affecting Facebook too much and its a shame that aussies will not be able to see overseas media on there as it would just show how valuable the free exposure on there is when people would have just started to share overseas news media instead.

To be honest, right now, even if you pay, you are still likely the product :)

Yeah this. Put your email to buy something from an online store and then you're gonna get spamned left right and center

I would agree with some comments that you should not rely on facebook for your news.

I doubt they really care about their revenue stream from Aussie.

Totally agree, but sadly I know a bunch of people in the UK and OZ who rely on Facebook for the majority of their news.

It's not like it's the only source of news, or should it be anyones primary source of news. Facebook is a Social Media Platform. If you want guaranteed access to news, go to a news outlet.

100% It started off as an awesome means to keep in social contact with friends and family. Now its a mess of clickbait, fake news, fake buy/sell, and data mining. Its not now a social networking platform its a data miner dressed as a keep in touch platform.

Can we appreciate the irony here that NZ media (Stuff.co.nz) chose to actively disassociate itself with Facebook back in July last year on principle as a result of Facebooks stance actively support misinformation, lies and being a general cesspool of humanity?

No irony that I can see. Stuff, like most infotainment sites, is well, an infotainment site. It does have news if you choose to filter the Bachelorette, Kardashians, and a Westport house that sold at 45% above RV

Yeah, maybe. When I read today that a TV complaint was upheld as a kid rode a cycle on the footpath, and NZ Post wont deliver to a brand new development as they has to step on 3 steps, anything is possible.

Id rather take the stance that I can read an opinion piece of in idiot journo, but he has a point. Or dismiss a journo Im ok with who seeks clickbait.

Filtering is the new norm. Any semi intelligent person can work out what's "normal"

They likely look at "How much is the AU media advertising expenditure" vs "How much would FB have to pay the AU media"

If they make less money from AU media advertising than would cost for them to keep the feeds going, the bean counters would say "Nope, not good for us"

Google decided that they would have better return by paying. Facebook decided that "we already send clicks to them so they should be happy"

They don't really care about Australia. It's a nice market but not a big deal either way. What they care about is the precedent it sets, particularly with regards to the EU.

Google got kneecapped by Microsoft so the precedent was less important.

First World problem (FFS)!

Are we now so stupid as a society we are unable to access our news outside of Facebook?

I give up, we are truly doomed.

No body knows what will fill the void left by the removal of "Trusted" media from facebook aus.

I am hopefull that even more trusted sources (i.e. government and company press releases used directly) will take over, but there is a good chance this won't be the case.

It may be positive if people stop using facebook as a news source, instead getting their news direct.

FWP? Maybe. Except it's not purely the news. But many other actual 'social' groups and pages in a single swoop. Some of these are coming back. Many still stuck

https://www.facebook.com/speedcafe - A car culture site.

Queensland health

SA Health

Multiple Police agencies

Rescue Helicopter groups (use as a branch for fundraising reach for example)

Employment unions / Trade Union

Disabled children and community groups like Domestic violence outreach groups.. the list goes on.

(They even screwed up and blocked themselves)

I've seen instructions to access a news website described as "Open browser, go to Google, type news site name, click first result".

Yes, people can be a bit dumb.
