Whenever I suggest to someone they consider giving up FB, the response is invariably "I'd love to, but I need it because ..."

The thing is, you didn't have it 10 or so years ago ... and you got by just fine. Seriously, you did.

I'd imagine it's tougher for the younger generations to do away with social media because it's all they've known. I just turned thirty and I've been on Facebook since 2007. Was on MySpace/Hi5 before that. But when I think of younger family members, these sites started before they were born. We lived in the time before social media.

Exactly. 10 years ago I was in fact making plans and keeping in touch with people on Facebook. Before that I was a small child and plans were made for me.

I think social media in general is a lot more ingrained in the lives of my generation because we've grown up with it.

The other thing about it is its cross platform. I would love to use iMessage instead of Messenger but I have one friend who insists on using Android so it's not an option. I would love to use something else to plan and manage events - but I'm not sure it exists, my friends don't really use calendars (Outlook/Gmail), and its hard to get people to sign up to a new thing.

Not on Facebook.

Never have been, expect I never will be.

Unlike Geekzone, I see no personal advantage to it.

I also have HUGE reservations about the morals and ethics of the company - reservations that have only got stronger over the years.

Likewise do not have Amazon, Google, Twitter or Instagram accounts.

Made the mistake years ago of joining LinkedIn - and that has been a complete waste of time and space.

FOMO is not an issue for me, JOMO is more like it.

I never joined LinkdIn. Didn't need to. I kept getting infected by it via trojans on the mailboxes of friends that harvested and spammed all their contacts. I have never understood how LinkedIn has managed to stay out of virus databases.

I have no love for facebook at all. I finally joined it for the first time in 2020. It has its uses and the messenger thing is useful.

I've made a bit of cash selling bits and pieces, so that's been good.

I mainly joined it for the above and to communicate with people I know.

FWIW, I still retain my FB account essentially as only a directory listing, and removed almost everything bar a post advising that “This account is no longer actively monitored. Any messages read every 1-2 months. If you require a more timely response, here are the other ways to get a hold of me...”

Gently encouraging my more tech inclined friends and family to adopt decentralized, federated and self host-able services such as Matrix / Riot IM

Personally, I dislike like how FB as a company is behaving and feel it is detrimental for us in the longer run to collectively rely so much on it. (Concentration of so much power into the hands of one for-profit entity by way of “Network effects”)

I currently use Facebook to connect with family and a few friends. I do not join groups, and try not to like anything.

Yup... irritated at getting "sponsored" crap because family members liked their pages.

Unfortunately there seem to be an increasing number of people who are becoming disengaged from mainstream society, angry about their perception of being downtrodden, and looking for an outlet for that anger.

I think that there *are* an increasing number of people being downtrodden, in the sense that the world's wealth is being concentrated in fewer and fewer hands, and that political systems are increasingly being subverted to continue that process. So anger is to be expected, and outlets sought.

Mostly I use it to follow meme and funny pages, pictures of cats, hobby pages. Without it I would be going to many many crap forums or worse, reddit.

It has the most functional messanger application that works really well for voice video and text. Others either try to force me to use a "phone number" or have no server side saved chat history, so I cant scroll back and search thru everything. It has the most people on it and always just works fine. It doesnt lose the call when transitioning from wifi to cellular like so many others to. Just a brief interuption and then reconnection and away it goes again.

Its a great way to share info on work to customers that follow us. Otherwise we would have to use mailchimp and a list and deal with all that crap whereas people can just like the page and things will show up for them.

I stopped posting on Facebook in the lead up to the 2017 election. It was getting too heated and I found myself wasting time arguing with strangers (and friends!) over things I didnt really care about. I slapped myself, stopped using it and didnt miss it one bit.

My profile is still active because I have not felt the need to deactivate completely, and I use Messenger. I organized my 40th on Facebook because it was the easiest way to reach the most people.

When I would check the responses to my birthday invitation I had a couple of cheeky scrolls and quickly remembered why I left in the first place, the same people posting the same stuff about things I don't care about.

I think it is a useful tool but it's open to abuse and brings out the worst in some people.

I've never used Twitter or Instagram.

Reddit and forums like Geekzone and Kiwiblog are about the extend of my social media.

Unfortunately , if youre in IT, you're pretty much expected to well well versed in most social media apps . Often questioned about use of some social media/messaging app & weird issues with it .
I loathe social media & messaging apps . I'd prefer to have my ph as clean as possible & not need to have these apps loaded .

Forums are becoming a thing of the past . 1 by 1 forums are dying off & replaced with FB pages.
Hobby groups & Clubs : if I want to stay in touch with my hobby clubs I had to have FB & Viber . NZ Forums for those disapeared a few years back : they died a slow death.

This might make me leave facebook.

Suggested Groups:

"Gay Meat Feast"

I have no idea why fb's algorithms came up with that, LOL.
