There is a disclosure statement in bold at the bottom? "Sam Stubbs is the chief executive of not-for-profit KiwiSaver provider Simplicity."

Most of the facebook groups I follow are moderated . Abusive posts get deleted . Posts that blatantly dont follow those FB groups rules are deleted
So whats the issue .

Just trying to align your two statements quoted above ...

How is such active moderation not a form of censorship? (Surely it's just censorship undertaken by the moderators not FB itself - but that's still censorship.)

If so, then there must indeed be a 'middle ground', so perhaps your issue may more be who undertakes that censorship?

The article clearly states upfront (in bold typeface) that it is an opinion piece and as well as disclosing the author is the CEO of Simplicity (also in bold). What additional disclosure are you looking for?

Where do we draw the line on censorship? The problem is its subjective and bound to be abused.

Just look at the media, they love to show misleading stories that get the views, a lot of them are factually incorrect.

Facebook is classed as a platform and hence has protections under US law protecting it from being responsible for what people say. I would argue this is only valid because they DON'T moderate content.

It might be a unpopular opinion but I don't believe they should be required to moderate content.

I'm not a fan of Facebook and I think it has many issues but for me this is not one of them.

Edit: To clarify I am talking about self moderation, this does not exempt them from complying with the law when requested to take a item down.

Saying Facebook doesn’t moderate content is nonsense. They actively moderate content that they deem to be objectionable. Murders, porn and breastfeeding are all moderated.

Then issue is both complex and simple. They are a platform so to some extent there should be free speech. The issue is when they are totally opaque with how the newsfeed works and how it amplifies content.

They are incentivised to promote engagement and engagement is high for extreme positions.

Either they should be totally transparent but not moderate or they remain opaque and moderate more extreme speech.

When not moderating content leads to genocide, it's not ok to stand behind US law, nor not take any responsibility for what you allow to be published. IMO.

The way these platforms gain a financial reward from it and push it harder because it's trending to drive it higher and keep the eyeballs is truly shocking. Imo Google has reigned some of this in a bit and might be thinking more about it. Facebook doesn't seem to want to change, and so many others.
