Brings back memories from pre 2000 days. We had an old computer but for a while we had 14.4 internet. With money later being tight we stopped the internet and got into BBS's. I recall my dad getting a call from a sysop gently telling me off. I was hammering his home phone line trying to access the BBS.

That doesn't make sense..... were you connecting then disconnecting? If so, then yeah that would've annoyed the heck outta me. :D

If it was engaged, then no way for a sysop to tell who was trying to call.

I recall it being the guy's normal home phone number, and when not in use he would be using it for his bbs. I think he mentioned on the bbs what the expected hours of service were. I just didn't know or understand the concept. So I kept calling at all hours of the day and it would be annoying.

Ah right :D Hehe.... I did that for a while, ran the BBS from 8pm-7am daily. Had to unplug all the other phones so wouldnt wake people up with incoming connections :)

My folks paid for a new line for me in the end ;) So went 24/7.....

Hello there! I'm a Yankee!

Forgive me if I sound daft, but I am the proprietor of the dial up modem pool here in the United States that AgencyNZ could be connected to! (Specifically, Houston, Texas)

One of the reasons why I got the modem pool, was because so many people in my circle of friends wanted a way to access BBSes, yet efficiently.

I, along with Regional Telephone Corporation (based in Rochester, NY USA), got together to make it all possible.

1. We made sure that direct trunks would come into my switch (just Asterisk) and that it'd be the purest connection (as in, no intermediaries except from one's local telephone company).

2. Native_rtp within asterisk would be used between a Cisco IAD (which the modem pool is connected to, via T1 PRI using DMS100 interpretation/switch type).

3. A bunch of numbers within RTC's upstream provider's inventory of numbers to be allocated to the modem pool, strategically placed across major points of the country.

The way that the New Zealand number connects here, to the southern parts of the states, is as follows.

1. A friend in Sydney graciously allowed me to use one of his numbering resources to allocate to the modem pool (maybe about 30 channels since the rest of the world uses E1 signalling)

2. Via IAX, it connects to my switch and then via SIP to my Cisco IAD and then to my modem pool.

Attached is the modem pool on top of the Cisco IAD.

Feel free to ask me more about this, and I will try to explain whatever questions may arise, to the best of my abilities.

Is that a 3800 series ISR down the bottom? It looks very much like the one in my garage from that photo lol.

Yes, that's a Cisco 3845. I don't have it on right now since it guzzles up too much power and the functions that I need is easily replicated on the IAD above at a lower energy cost and more simplistic as well.

I did a sh inv at one time when I bought this at a great deal for $44 USD I think with a lot of cards.

Hey there, as the Sysop who runs Agency BBS I'd just like to drop you a quick note of thanks and appreciation for being able to offer this dial up option again.

Thank you 🙂

Best, Paul aka Avon

I was randomly googling to find the old Edge BBS list from AKL and came across this thread...

Ah the memories.

I'd like to make a special mention to old man Harry Rose who ran an AKL PC based BBS only during the hours of 8pm to 8am or something and if you dared ring outside the hours he'd scream down the line at your modem saying to NOT CALL TILL AFTER 8PM - he was very irate. Dont know why he couldnt just fork out for an extra phone line. So you'd just make random calls during non BBS hours.

Someone mentioned David Dix who from memory was an a-hole, who ran that Unix based BBS System...

Special shout outs to Ben - Portunus's LCBCS was awesome - ex ATL2 ( Anti Telecom Lobby ) - ben ran waffle for USENET feeds, Nigel from Hairless BBS which ran on that ridiculously colourful ansi BBS system that was terrible over anything slower than 4800... The Atomic Cafe - Chris Gill ....
