I currently use Facebook to connect with family and a few friends. I do not join groups, and try not to like anything.

My use of Twitter has been reduced a lot - including uninstalling the app from my smartphone and checking only once a day for new direct messages. I hope to stop using it completely sometime soon.

Today I logged out from Facebook and Twitter on my laptop and desktop. I had already uninstalled the Twitter app from my phone so I removed the Facebook app today as well.

I only have it for some businesses and companies that use it as their sole, or main, online presence. It's a pain in the butt to login just to see what their products and pricing etc is. I have told the odd one that they should have all the same info on a normal website, but it usually falls on deaf ears, or I get told "this is the modern way".

Because I use it so infrequently I have a really basic password that is easy to remember.

Work now uses Workplace from Facebook as our internal communication system. Luckily it uses our standard company password. I was surprised at the number of the younger staff members that don't like it or even want to use it. Would have thought they would have loved it, and it would have been us older blokes that resisted.

We have Workplace as well and it is a terrible idea. A lot of staff treat it like 'normal' Facebook and it creates friction between staff, absorbs at lot of staff time, and achieves very little. As a government agency my biggest fear is that content on Workplace could be exposed via OIA and I don't think many staff are conscious of that when they post on there.

It's a classic example of software procurement in large organisations being done by people who give in to slick sales pitches, without properly thinking through the practicalities of how the product would fit in to the organisation.

"As a government agency my biggest fear is that content on Workplace absolutely positively definitely will be exposed via OIA"
FTFY ;)

And since any random bit of to-and-fro could end up as being considered a Record under the PRA, I hope your employer is preserving all the content so it can be dissected with the benefit of hindsight in 2040.
Even if you have a separate 'proper' Records Management System, I'll bet that less than half the conversations in Workplace that ought to be going into the RMS, are going there.

If you don't care too much about your promotion prospects, you could:

  • ask your Chief Security Officer (you are obliged to have one) how Official Information held on Workplace is being protected in accordance with the NZISM, which requires Unclassified Official Information to be protected as if it were classified at RESTRICTED; and
  • ask your Privacy Officer (you are obliged to have one of them, too) how Personal Information held on Workplace is being protected in accordance with the Privacy Act 1993 and after 1st December 2020, the Privacy Act 2020; and
  • find out to whom the CEO has delegated responsibility for management of Public Records under the PRA, and ask them about the integration of Public Records and Workplace

{Lights blue touchpaper and retires}

Not really used too much as "normal" Facebook by anyone yet.

The "Informal" group is the open group and it usually just has photos of our equipment and products in use. Also the odd photo of our competitors' products in trouble. Some photos of interesting scenery and sunrises etc taken by the service and sales guys as they work around the country. A few items of appreciation from happy customers. All pretty harmless.

There are also groups for staff vacancies, announcements, promotions, etc which contain information of a more serious nature, but nothing that is really confidential or damaging if it got out.

I think the reason for getting it was to have a central easily accessible location for all staff to see what is happening around the company. Probably works quite well for our 250+ staff spread through 17 branches across the country.

The CEO posted a video most mornings during lockdown to keep us up to date. This was quite good.

Have to admit I’m a daily user of the Facebook, started as a means to keep up with friends/family overseas or I wouldn’t have on speed dial etc.

however I now mostly use it to follow a few hobbie groups I’m into and follow a few podcasts etc tied into these interests.

I do actively read Some of the crazy pages (advance NZ, the local couple of ANZ candidates in the area) for a laugh.

Im not part of any groups or pages etc related to my area of work, as I’m firmly of the opinion my Facebook page is mine personally and is seperate from my employment.

I’m not giving it up anytime soon, as I find the single access point for what I want to look up easy and simple to use, and often something on one of these groups compels me to head to their main website to view the appropriate forum to find out more.

I’ve also got both Instagram and Twitter, neither of which I actively use or frequent more than once a month.
