I am thinking of getting one via You Shop from Amazon, can someone confirm the power adapter will work with NZ voltage ok?

No.

ChromeOS - everything is in the cloud. This laptop has limited use when not connected to the net.

What benefits/disadvantages between this and a similarly priced netbook?

I presume that these are also running low cost and possibly slow processors?

$350 netbooks would be painful I imagine, only one in that range I can find on pricespy is below with a Atom N2600, 10.1" 1024x600 display. The keyboard is most likely pretty average while the Chromebook's gets compared to those on Lenovo's ThinkPads

If you really only want to spend <$400 I don't see how people could look elsewhere. Unless of course you need Windows 7 for a very particular reason. Photoshop and other heavier tasks would be horrible on a netbook anyway

Would love to buy one through the Geekzone link but the new $249 one doesn't show up there (or in a regular search for chromebook). At least for me with my NZ login - perhaps I'm doing it wrong.

I HIGHLY doubt these will make it to retail here, maybe some parallel importers will pick them up but don't expect them to be on Dick Smith, Noel Leeming, JB shelves

Ouch sold out on Amazon already

some of early reviews looked pretty good

MOBILE: Huawei P30

Very keen on one of these to use as a general family laptop - our Acer recently died.

I'm interested in feedback from anyone who manages to buy from Amazon -> freight-forward.

I wish our retailers would pick these up, I guess no margin and they would completely cannibalize low-end ($600+) laptops :(

I've purchased from Amazon using a freight-forwarding company (Shipito), no issues. You do need to change your credit card address to the US address you are using though.

Wonder how long until (or IF) it will be available in Oz? Could make it worthwhile popping over for it and the Nexus 7 at the same time. (as couldn't otherwise order together, shipping both together exceeds the GST threshold)

I see the incredible rapid progress of mobile phone performance has spilled over into the laptop sector and Is pushing them to new heights. The very first example of that is the newest Chromebook which is the first device with the latest next generation of CPUs which will be powering our future superphones (none of the current phones on offer have it, but the Nexus 10 is powered by the same CPU and we will see phones next year powered by it too, maybe even by the end of this year). Thus we have now with the Chromebook a laptop bringing the low power, long battery, low heat & silent (no fans!) performance of cellphones to the laptop level.
