There is not just one chromebook.. this thread originally referred to the Samsung chromebook, but shortly thereafter acer created one and now HP have made one plus there is a Google branded one. They each have different specs and are different prices. The samsung one was the first of the "re-launched" chromebooks and had a good balance between quality and price.

You can play movies on the chromebook but I personally only use it for watching streamed content, I would not bother copying movies to the SD card for playback (but maybe this is just me?). Movie playback would be one task where I would use my nexus 10 over the chromebook.

yup. i realised that there are other chromebooks too. i was specifically referring to the Samsung Chromebook series 3 that you can buy for 250 from USA.

So you would not recommend watching movies on it? I would see myself doing that while i am travelling - or on a plane. Connect up my external and watch movies, or do some offline tasks.

I guess it's perfectly acceptable in that situation, but I just find the quality of the display and viewing angles are pretty average. Maybe wait to see what others say, I don't have much experience watching videos on it as I normally use my TV/XBMC.

I have also never even used it without a network connection. But for web browsing/composing emails and the like, I find it way better than any tablet. The fact its cheap helps, I don't really care about it and if it broke or got stolen, it would not be the end of the world.

FYI for everyone, the Acer Chromebook is now officially in NZ via Dove Electronics. RRP is $375 + GST so it's no bargain, but I guess that's what you pay for a distribution channel and local "support" (in quotes). I don't know of any retailers stocking it yet but I can purchase from Dove so drop me a line if you're interested (this is not an advertisement so much as a useful fact given the topic of this forum - happy to edit out if necessary).

I'm finding it really great, and using it whenever I'm on the move, but then I'm Google centric so it's a no-brainer. It also rocks an ssh client via the Crosh Chrome plugin so I can remotely manage servers too which is handy.

Not trolling. I had a Chromebook for a while. One of the models with no local storage and seriously if you don't have permanent connection then it's pretty much of no use. The new hardware though sounds good and I would seriously consider either Linux or Windows for it.

I kinda have high hopes for Google to release something new this week. Hoping it is a new chromebook.

I am considering going the Tablet PC route now. I would get the Tablet + Laptop experience - looking for a portable second computer as I already have quite a powerful desktop.

I really liked the Envy X2 (all the advertising on this site a couple of weeks ago did get my attention :))

Someone on the forums recommended waiting for the next gen intel processors to be released so thats what I am doing now.

I was keen to get a chromebook in the mean time just to have a play around with a new toy and get a feel of Chrome OS.

People have put Linux on Chromebooks (it mystifies me why a person would want Windows on it however... they're not really designed for that).

I'm considering a Chromebook as part of my next possible upgrade.

If I am connected to the internet I get it, I can run Chrome, Gmail, Google Drive and all that good stuff.

What I'm not sure about is what I could use it for if I don't have an internet connection. I can use my phone as a Wifi hotspot but there are going to be times when I'm not online.

Can anybody point me to some resources to answer that question?

also just adding on to the question. how is the movie watching on there? If i have movies on a flash drive that I want to watch on the Chromebook, is it simple enough to watch it while being offline?
