There are a lot of myths around Chromebooks not working well offline.

A quick google search reveals that's no longer true. This post is near the top of the list and gives a good overview of what you can expect offline:

I just tried mine offline and I can do most things, including creating a new document or presentation, (oddly spreadsheet is turned off, must look into why that is).

Re movies - good question, hadn't tried that til now.

But yes! Just put 720P mp4 of Dave Grohl's Sound City doco on a USB stick and it's playing fine off that.
Just opened it from the file explorer. Seems to have a specialist app for playing it.

Copying it to internal drive is drag-and-drop from the file explorer if you needed to.

Well, it appears Google I/O has nothing really in store in terms of new Chromebook hardware (aside from those lucky bastards getting a free Pixel! wowzers), so probably best to buy from Amazon now.

Well, i think the tickets to the I/O was like 5k or something, so i think they should have gotten a Nexus 10, a new Nexus 7 and the Pure S4 along with the pixel ;)

It could be worth waiting a little longer... I've heard from Samsung NZ that there will be plans to launch Chromebooks here in May/June. This has been pushed back from late April. Whether that delay means that a new version is going to be launched in the coming weeks (and that is the one we get over the current Series 3) or supply issues for the current Series 3 is anyone's guess

PlayTech is now stocking the entry level Acer CB for $429, a horrendous markup for a $200 device in the states

I was looking at the C7 ... but the version we have here is an old one. The new model has 4GB RAM and a 6hr battery, which are pretty good specs. You're right about the markup - just look at the Nexus 7, another US$199 device!

I might hang on to see the Samsung.

Amazon and Newegg have dropped the price to $229. Newegg was including a free 500GB portable HDD but doesn't appear to be showing up anymore

Using YouShop you could get one here shipped for $340 give or take a few dollars
