I have been running a small IT support business now for about 8 years. I have a growing list of deaf customers. I really enjoy working with them, they are usually quite humourous and willing to give you a bit of cheek (as well as receive it) which goes a long way towards making for a pleasent client experience.

Anyway, does anyone know if there is a specialist deaf focused IT support serrvice out here? Between skype, texting, online chat, rmeote desktop and learning sign as fast as possible it should be possible to provide better service than they are currently getting. I wont go into the head banging frustrations incurred dealing with ISPs on their behalf, and I can hear , butI suspect a deaf friendly, web based business, with local peopel to help, might go a long way towards not only making people happy but possibly earning some money at the same time. A win win situation.

Anyone out there involved in deaf it support, know of deaf it support, want to be involved in deaf it support?

Hi Shane,
I work in the Deaf community and often help out with basic computer support in Hamilton for some of my Deaf friends. I don't know of any IT company that caters for Deaf people but I have met a few people who are very clever around computers but I don't know of any Deaf people who have worked in an IT support role supporting customers. Maybe there is a business opportunity there? Skype, some basic training, remote access, and they can sign.

Hello Shane,

I am Deaf and I have recently set up my own IT business based in Auckland. I set up my business after working for a large organisation serving the Deaf community in a role that included, among other non-IT things, software support work. Currently I do various freelancing work for organisaitons and individuals. My work currently varies from basic computer tutorials/repair for Deaf (and hearing!) inviduals to software support/training for a national-wide organisation with a large number of Deaf staff.

I think there is an oppotunity there and I have considered getting one or two of the deaf poeple I know to workon it - employment is hard to get for them.

However as a commercial idea ... they have the sign skills but not the pc skills. I have the pc skills but not the sign skills. It would probably work as a community support idea to startt with but with some support could be commercially viable.

for a non deaf person like myself we can use txt and irc etc to work on communications but would love to haver the deaf folk working on this as well. its there community and there is no reason that this cant involve them.

Keen to collaborate?
