I am trying to start-up a webstore selling more affordable tablets, tablet hybrids, tablet accessories. Brands that are lesser known but have a reputation still for quality manufacturing and have competitive specifications.

Anyway, I am doing some market research and it would be great to have your help, especially if you own or would buy a tablet, phablet, powerbook, tablet case, keyboard, microsd etc...

Unfortunately I am a little way from being able to start my business (I am still attempting to fund it), so I can't fairly promise anything :/

If I could reasonably do so, I probably would.

It is however very short - nine or ten multi-option type questions. Not at all like those lengthy ones most companies do. Only a few mins long.

hope you're looking into the low cost Windows options too?

8" is achievable for around nz$150 and 10" detachable 2n1 hybrid with a keyboard for under nz$300

It would be useful to understand some of the brands you're looking at. It's hard to answer a question like 'Your perception of these products overall' without know the actual products.

I have a Samsung Note 8 and I love it.

Yeah I am. The whole tablet thing is diversifying into phablets, powerbooks and hybrids more too. So thats also on my mind.

I intend to offer some windows tablets, some phablets, some powerbooks etc.

I have a Samsung Note 8 and I love it.

Primarily the best of the chinese brands (yeah I am aware there are plenty of bad ones) was the original inspiration.

Samsung and apple spend A LOT on marketing which adds to the cost, and they also charge whatever the consumer is willing to pay. In some obvious cases like the new iphone or some of the samsung phones, that does not actually mean better build quality per se. Larger companies sometimes care less because they have a captive market.

I think tablets are great for convenience, portability and also non-power users. More people should have access to decent moblie computing tech without ruining their finances. I honestly believe that.

Onda for example is pretty decent and recognised as good within china. I've used a good recent 9.7 inch of there's, and got good feedback on it too. It was fast, high end display, had a decent battery life, solid build (I have about half a dozen tablets at cost for research).

Basically if they are a reliable manufacturer, and the product is good, and affordable I would look at it.

Considering hyundai and also any well known brands that are in an affordable price range (Fortunately some of the more well known brands are getting more affordable too)

To be completely honest, I am still researching in terms of what I will stock. It's a rapidly changing market (for example, as I said above, moving in a direction of more diversity).

I am relying on personal testing and critical reviews and what I know of the hardware specs to refine things. I intend to be picky, and also look at what people say they want.

But there are decent higher speced tablets, phablets and powerbooks out there, in android and in windows that are a lot cheaper than samsung or apple. Some of the known brands like ASUS and HP have cheaper offerings that people are largely unaware of.

And yeah, its hard to assess perception without trying the tablets themselves, and having a more fixed idea of the brands, but thats okay.

In order to sell products, I will need to know what assumptions people come in with regarding less known brands and the cheaper price point, prior to knowing very much. But yeah, I would say, the very best of the chinese brands, and some known brands with more affordable offerings.

Oh worth mentioning for those that mention that it would be hard to find accessories, like cases, and screen protectors and so on - part of the vision of the store is that everything will be available in one place.

So there will be cases, keyboards, micro sd, cables, screen protectors - as much as possible those will be cases for the specific models (with some universal cases too).

I'd like something like an 8 inch version of a surface pro 3 for around $199rrp please :P

With the name brands hitting 2, 3 and 4th generations of devices now their low end units are priced quite competitively, I can buy a samsung android tablet or a toshiba W8.1 tablet right now for under $200 locally, I'm not sure i would want to save $50 to buy a non branded and possibly less supported device

A good Windows tablet with 4g at a good price.

To be honest if you are going to sell the higher end e-bay brands you'll have to compete on price or a major point of difference.

It is very easy and quick to buy from overseas these days so you'll have your work cut out for you.

4G is not coming thru yet on the low cost Chinese devices

What modern/ up to date spec devices can you purchase for 200 or under locally from the main brands?

The galaxy tab 3 lite for example, has a TFT screen! (with a pretty old resolution, just 1gb ram, 8gb internal storage, dual core 1.4ghz cpu - battery is alright though). Thats really old. I purchased a tablet for about 140 a few years ago, and it still has better specs, lol.

Personally I would not advise anyone purchase a many generations old tablet, they are genuinely bad user experiences compared with modern tech.

For onda for example, a 9.7 inch windows or android tablet has the kind of specs you see on newer gen apple or samsung. Proper hi def retina IPS screens, 2gb ram or more, Larger nand fast storage, all the bells and whistles. And unlike ipad, expandable storage, hmdi etc.

BTW, there are some decent looking windows tablets and powerbook type hybrids coming out of china. Don't think you'd be looking at 199 NZD retail for awhile though! They are as a general rule, slightly pricier than android, especially the ones with laptop style keyboard docks.

And not QUITE up to the specs of surface pro 3 yet (that thing has serious storage/ram etc) - that said it retails for somewhere under 3 grand, so lol! You aren't going to get something worth than much for 200 bucks. (And tbh, I don't think 8gb ram and 512 SSD is actually WORTH just under 3 grand - consider how much those components would cost for a PC for example)

Still they are high enough spec'd (the chinese ones) to run windows well, unlike some of the earlier gen stuff, and other cheaper windows tablets.

Yeah, I doubt amaze is a decent manufacturer. They have just popped up recently. Specs aren't great. A quick google reveals the wi-fi is underpowered. Online complaints pop straight up with a google. Would run slow given ram versus screen res. And screen res is pretty low for a 10 inch. Kinda old gen specs. At a glance, looks shoddy. Probably has a TFT or plastic screen, and weak frame/ports or underpowered battery too.

You can get tablets 8 inch and under for under 200 that are pretty good specs, reliable manu. But over that, I have my doubts.
