xpd: And only 1 store taking part in it... theres still nothing stopping people from abusing it and leaving fake reviews etc.

Thank you.

It's a start-up so not even indexed yet, not even a review posted (would be nice) and no stores have been recruited on the first day.  All reviews to be moderated and with email follow up but yes there are trolls out there with nothing good to say about anything.

amanzi: I think people are way too harsh in this forum. Well done to those that manage to follow through with their ideas and actually launch something.

Ironically though you were the harshest. I prefer to sugercoat things and am more glass half full. The problems are nothing getting  a web designer can't fix.

Thank you.

What problems would they be?

Go check out rankedbyreview.co.nz for ideas, previously womf.co.nz

The only difference, rankedbyreview is for bricks and mortar businesses mostly

Geekamouse: I guess most members will be internet shoppers and might even appreciate the opportunity to comment publicly on their online shopping experience from time to time .  I wonder if members might find the new web site ShopReviews useful.  There's even a monthly draw for a $100 gift voucher that reviewers are automatically entered into.  Observations, views and even reviews welcomed.

Are you associated with that site?

Yes.

Ok, just wanted to make sure.

Good on you for having a go at something. Yes the site needs some polishing, but you gotta start somewhere.

Mainly design and usability ones. But it is something you may want to get professional advice on, as web designers will know the best options. But off the top of my head, it isn't responsive for mobiles, the buttons look unprofessional and made in word, and infact they don't look like buttons that you can click. The links on the footer, when you hover over them the font size changes causing all the links to move position. etc. It is all about the image it projects to someone wanting to post a review.

You made a start so congrats on getting this far! Btw, on the submit page it is not clear if the user's email address will be public or not after submission.

Designwise the biggest current problem is the main navigation (top of page) that looks exactly like a banner advertisement.

So the business model is looking for retailers to pay you to monitor their reputation?
If I were a in the market for a reputation monitoring service, this is what I would be looking for:

  • Reports/metrics and monitoring of social media pages, twitter mentions
  • A way to verify that reviewers were actually customers of mine - and a way to show that to people browsing reviews
  • Even if you couldn't go that far - they need to be guaranteed to be real people, with a reputation themselves. i.e. integrated to other online services
  • Professional web app design
  • Not another online directory where I have to maintain my business details (Finda, Zenbu, Yellow, Facebook business, Google Maps, etc etc etc)

As a consumer it would need to be as frictionless as possible. Not interested in creating yet another user account, not interested in waiting for manual review moderation.

I think this would be a pretty hard market to get into... I wonder whether it could make more sense to use something like Google business reviews as a backend and use your site to present lists of shops

That is the problem, many of the review system, such as restaurant review websites, they could be anyone making the review. It is up to the website owner though to authenticate it fully before posting it. One way possibly is to link it to peoples facebook accounts, but not everyone uses facebook. It does make you wonder what the point of a review website like this is though, and where it would be monetised. I think it would really need to be specific to some industry, as most online directories now already have reviews built in, and they cater to the general businesses.

I saw at the bottom of the site "The views and opinions expressed on this website do not necessarily reflect those of the operators."

Do they reflect or not? "Not necessarily" is not conclusive.

Having said that, if you are a publisher (which you are since you run the site) then you are responsible for whatever is posted there. If any store take that to courts complaining of "defamation" it's you that will have to go and defend, not the reviewer.
