+1 user, well done. Providing it is within your t and c's I wouldnt worry about taking users money, you have a viable product and it gives people an opportunity to

Hey lads.

I hope to get you all excited, especially on the geek side of things (i know some, if not most of you would have satellite data enabled on your device) 

 

Another big update just landed for TrailTreks: NZ Topo Maps. Loads of it is behind-the-scenes stuff you'll never notice (the boring but important bits), but there are two things I reckon you'll actually care about:

 

1. Manually create a track/route

 

Heaps of you have asked for a way to plot your own track or route inside the app. It's finally here.

 

Planning your next trip and sharing it couldn't be simpler:

 

     

  • Open the menu
  • Tap Tracks
  • Add track
  • Manually create track

Drop your points, save it, done. Great for sketching out a route before you head off, or sharing a plan with your mates.

 

2. Location beaconing (BETA)

 

This one's for the people back home who worry about you. Start a beacon session and it'll share your live location on a map, so whoever you send the link to can see roughly where you are, even when you're well out of normal coverage.

 

It's built specifically to work with the satellite data plans currently offered by Spark and One NZ, so you will need a device that supports satellite connectivity. Good news is 2degrees have satellite data on the way too, which should open this up to a lot more 5G-ready phones once it lands.

 

How it works:

 

     

  • Menu → start a beacon session (select expiry time for the link/session data)
  • Send the share link to your person (anyone with the link would be able to see the locations)
  • They can follow along until the session expires

A couple of important bits, please read these:

 

     

  • This is NOT an SOS or emergency service. It won't call for help. If you're in trouble, you still need a PLB or messenger device.
  • It's in BETA, so expect the odd rough edge. Feedback very welcome.
  • Sessions expire on their own, so you're not broadcasting your location forever.

Would love if anyone there goes on hunting/hike trips and could give Location Beaconing a go. More testers, more feedback from real users - better app :)

Those are some great new features. I especially like the route builder function and can see myself using that a heap. Next step is to convince the wife that a satellite capable phone upgrade is a worthwhile investment for me now hahahaha.
