I have no problems on ebay with how things are formatted. If its too bad which a very small minority of listings are I just go to the next one in the list.

Hell, even just all the large images on a page on trademe would be nice to be able to scroll thru them vs having to peck at them one at a time in a poorly alligned lightbox.

When is Wheedle coming back?

Asked this morning when the site would reopen, general manager Carl Rees told NBR, "At this point in time I have no idea. Hopefully before Christmas but it could be the New Year."

Today, he said he could not talk about the project in detail, but did offer, "The fixes are minimal compared to the size of our entire source code and development. We identified the areas where we had problems and we have engaged an independent company to do the fixes ... for peace of mind."

"All I can say is that it?s not the company that WINZ used of late," he joked.

That last quote is precious. They are obviously not taking it seriously.

I don't know how it is still getting so much free publicity for something that failed to launch. The other one that launched seems to be running fine now, but you never hear anything about it now because something that is working fine isn't really news to the NZ media.

I see they're actively developing the holding page, which is now different... They even have a "msapplication-tooltip" tag - the top of the list of useless things to have on a holding page.

It looks like the Wheedle PR is working this week. Both Stuff and NBR posted notes about the site coming back "anytime soon".

Wheedle drew flak in some circles for hiring staff in India for its initial build, although Rees said the key problem was insufficient pre-launch testing.

Rees refused to identify the independent company implementing the bug fixes, or where it was located.

"All I can say is that it’s not the company that WINZ used of late," he joked.

The Christchurch-based online trading platform, bankrolled by Mainfreight co-founder Neil Graham, closed in October just days after its fanfare launch, because of software problems. One allowed people to change the reserve price of other members' auctions.

However, Rees said Wheedle was never hacked and had now been "thoroughly checked". He was confident traders would give it a second chance.

"We have put a lot of things in place that will ease people's minds. Security is extremely tight now.

"The genuine people out there can appreciate you don't always get things right first time. It is not like Novopay where they have just carried on."

The "genuine people out there"? That sounds like a cheap shot at critics.

Yah that actually really annoyed me. I am not this guys biggest fan, there is something about him that rubs me the wrong way, arrogance perhaps?

In my opinion the sentence "The genuine people out there can appreciate you don't always get things right first time. " was aimed at people like posters in this thread and others around the media who pointed out their flaws.

Those probably aren't "genuine people", they aren't supporting the underdog, and so on...

Founders have money to burn but more importantly: everybody loves a train wreck : ).

That said, I will be putting up some listings to give them a chance. The TV advertising planned should give them lots of eyeballs during the start period but they will need a good plan to keep them.

No doubt every kid on the block will be practicing their h4x0r fu on it for at least a week after the launch. If it crumbles like a soggy biscuit under any of those antics (um.. again) then Wheedle will have a very hard time convincing anyone the site can be trusted and that could become a real barrier.

I think it will be pretty rock solid this time, although wondering who in NZ they have got to fix it up. Or whether they are still using the original developers.
