So,

Today i heard Through a family member from his neighbour (whos a chorus tech on the UFB side IIRC.) that there is Fibre being ran right past the currently in progress upgrade on WAK/C with the intention of providing Rural fibre. (its my understanding there has been considerable funds put in to make this happen aswell.)

Going to try and pop in for a drink or two and get more information from the neighbour, but with moving and such this weekend it might be a little while!

Would anyone have any contacts that could provide a bit more information on it?

The whole rural Fibre situation seems to be touched on rather lightly on GZ so finding information seems to be pushing it.

my hopes arent high that there will actually be fibre available, i suspect it is some confusion between the extra reach the copper will have coming off the cabinet rather than the exchange like the bulk of connections currently are, but if it is happening ild love to atlest find some more details about it all!

There are pockets of RBI fiber available, It is not cheap to connect. I haven't seen a prequal less than $5k and that was an install for a house with the cabinet in question on the berm in front of it

Most problems are the result of previous solutions...

Yeah, i have questioned a fair few of the pockets around here considering the seemingly illogical starting and finishing of where it is available, but have been rather short on details.

installation fees, not surprised, does it come under UFB after that point? in terms of what chorus charge isps.

As mentioned in the OP, details where vague at best, being second hand thats kinda to be expected.

The local knowledge of whos apparently have pushed this with chorus was there but that could be very easily confused from a we want, to yes this is actually happening... - i wouldnt have even dug into it if it wasnt coming from someone in chorus who would have the information/connections to know!

TBQH bugger all people really know about it, Dealings with a number of national carriers resulted in "No such product"

circuits vary in speed alot? thats a bit of a scary thought!

i think just about every self claimed chorus employee on here has had a chat with me about it at some point! found it was oh too common that that is pushing everyone knowledge!

thus asking for someone who actually has the details or a contact..

Not really, most UFB circuits home users have only have CIR 2.5mbit, The rest is based on how congested everything is :)

The other thing to consider is the RBI network is part of the Copper network and UFB is a completely separate network in all respects.
Different ISAMs (ALU7302) and different backhaul switches (ALU7450).

Yes the boxes may be physically the same ones that run copper but Chorus for separation reasons built an entirely new network not using any existing components.

So I know Chorus don't put OLT cards in cabinets it's all fed back to the central exchange. The cabinets are only holding the passive optical splitters and no gear perse.

So Rural RBI would be going back to an exchange. I think Spark have plans to get handovers in those areas... but I don't know if we have done that yet.

That map doesn't look like it's rendering right, I cant see any address entry bar nor are the options for RBI Fibre there. Happens on two computers each with Chrome and IE11

Hurr you are correct, thats what I get for posting before coffee, quick check of a few known places still shows no PON/Fibre in the rural space. Just normal RBI DSL

Great to know it is going to have GPON along it! Interesting to hear WAK/B will be too! Makes sense as to why so much effort has gone into installing roadside access too!

What im actually looking into is if that fibre is going Past the WAK/C DSLAM, which is what i have been told is happening. - this is where my complete surprise comes in!

As for maps, ill certainly be keeping my eye out for it, not to mention if the digging starts it will be pretty damn obvious that it is indeed happening, but cabinet upgrade is clearly the priority right now and so it probably wont be for a while that ild see if anything else is happening.

Well aware of the June 2015 expected completion too!

You are quite correct It is not rendering correctly.

The tool has had a mishap - the Webbinator is looking at it now, normal transmission expected later today.

Will post once it is working correctly & show you a worked example.

If you go to the Rural Broadband page and look at the Rural Fibre map at:http://www.chorus.co.nz/rural-broadband-initiative/fibre-in-rural-community/fibre-to-rural-communities-1 when you search an address (that is adjacent to rural fibre) you will get something like the following;

The properties along this road - where the blue line exists - can talk to their ISP about rural fibre services.

If you are within 20km's of the serving exchange you will have access to the same GPON services as the UFB customers in "town".

In your example - the blue line will appear on the map next May-Jun, after which you can make inquiries with your favourite ISP.
