If you go to the Rural Broadband page and look at the Rural Fibre map at:http://www.chorus.co.nz/rural-broadband-initiative/fibre-in-rural-community/fibre-to-rural-communities-1 when you search an address (that is adjacent to rural fibre) you will get something like the following;

The properties along this road - where the blue line exists - can talk to their ISP about rural fibre services.

If you are within 20km's of the serving exchange you will have access to the same GPON services as the UFB customers in "town".

In your example - the blue line will appear on the map next May-Jun, after which you can make inquiries with your favourite ISP.

I have hit a brick wall in my attempt to find a RSP to connect me to these. The usual line is "You're not in a UFB coverage area" and no amount of explanation seems to help.

As such I have a few questions:

1 - Does the 'access to the same GPON services as UFB customers in town' extend to all the 'blue' routes indicated on the map? (If within 20km of the exchange)

2 - Does a service provider have to do anything "special" or different vs connecting in a UFB area?

3 - Are all RSPs able to connect to these or are there specific ones to use?

I think the 2nd and 3rd questions are the most important.

Not all RSP/ISPs have handovers in every area. I know Spark has the most coverage and connections in either all or almost all areas.

The pertinent part of this is:

The fibre backhaul link being built to support the new DSLAM at WAK/C & WAK/B

i.e backhaul for current ISAM's, not necessarily GPON

Hi All,

Yes we can hook customers up to Rural Broadband, this is (as explained here) Fibre which has been installed under the RBI rollout generally to Schools, but there are occasionally options where new fibre is also laid.

As sbiddle mentioned the costs for install are not subsidised, they are almost always in the 4 figures, even if you run your own trench. However once its installed you can join any of our normal plans, including 200/200 for the normal prices avalaible in the UFB zones.

To get a feasibility to see if you get Rural UFB you can email ruralbroadband@snap.net.nz for existing customers the prequalification is free, for non Snap customers there is a $99 application fee which will be refunded if the result is negative. if the result is positive we will credit this back once the fibre is installed. The normal response period for a result is a target of 30 days, but it can take longer.

Note if there is fibre avalaible but you choose not to take it up (remember you need to be prepared to pay >$xxxx and sometimes into the 5 figures for the install, the application fee is not refundable, there is a reasonable amount of work required to provide the quotes.

We have great success with fibre to the home outside of UFB areas, this is not always limited to Chorus areas either. some of our customers have had fibre to their house for over 10 years.

Interesting... here is the reply I received from Snap when I emailed them about this very subject only 3 days ago...

"Thank you for emailing Snap! Unfortunately at this time, we don't offer rural fibre services, however if you keep an eye out on our social media page, if we were to offer that service it would be on there.

Yeah I'm guessing that's what happened... but it's difficult enough trying to find a provider for these services!

Sorry yes this is only avalaible through the ruralbroadband@snap.net.nz address, we have not yet included the process via our Call Centre or our normal helpdesk yet (which will happen soon) but its still a very new bespoke service at the moment.

So!

it seems progress on this is slowly moving along!

What i thought to be fibre being laid couple of months ago now when they put the new WAK/C Whisper Cabinet in place, i assume the earlier was simply ducting (Green Tubing if i recall correctly.)

Today i was pleasantly surprised to find cones in my normal path around contractors who were running a pretty blue tube right the way up.

Wonder how far off things are now! (i don't actually expect an answer here, Well aware the dates are set as late as Jun-15, but its exciting to see something more is happening after the month of so of seemly downed tools!)
