Do plumbers usually have some kind of electrical registration allowing them to replace hot water cylinder thermostats or do you need to get an electrician for that specific job?

Electrician to replace/test it out sorry, both my brothers are plumbers, and both won't touch any of the electrical parts on a hot water cylinder. Unless of course they are doing things in their own home

Plumbers can get registration as an "Associated Tradesperson (Plumber)". There's a similar provision for gasfitters.

Oh yeah, forgot about that!

18 week course apparently, but I'm guessing a few Plumbers might have them

Like somebody said, plumbers can get a restricted electrical ticket for doing things exactly like that. Some have it, some don't.
