Hi,

In my bathroom there are some sort of black dots which appear again and again like in a few months . I clean it but it shows up again.

The bathroom is within a house , no window but does have fan + light combo thingy

can anyone please help to solve this problem

Fan plus light combos generally don't have much airflow through them. The mould is probably caused by dampness that isn't being taken out properly.

Use Exit Mould to remove it, and it might prevent it coming back for a while. Wear OLD CLOTHES when you do this, it will stain clothes.

The solution is probably better ventilation, or a shower dome.

thanks for that. ventilation would be hard as there is not much scope for window . shower dome - how much do they cost? - are they enough ventilated themselves / good to use?

Google "shower dome", there's info on their website. The idea is they keep the moisture in the shower box rather than letting it escape into the room, and because the steam doesn't mix with cold air it doesn't fog up.

In my new bathroom I have a semi-commercial grade extractor over the shower, replacing the two residential grade extractors from the old bathroom.

Mould was on Close Up last night, here is what I recall

Mould cleaners dont work, it will come back. They change the odour and appearance, its still there
Use soap and elbow grease, more effective
Ventilate to stop moisture/humidity forming.

PS, we have a shower dome, great. Keeps shower warm if bathroom is cool, vastly reduces condensation.

Its basically slightly dilute bleach in a spray bottle.

But, its also about the only cleaning product I have encountered that actually performs as advertised. You spray, you wait, you wipe, mold is gone!

Make sure you do wipe it off any surface it falls on, it made our plastic toilet seat go all manky after some fallout from spraying the ceiling above it.

The micro biologist on Close Up says that bleach, sodium hypochlorite just colours the mould so you cannot see it. I guess he knows. maybe you can On Demand it? On soft stuff like wood, it roots in too.

If your wall linings are GIB etc then the mould spores have taken root deep in the wall material. Cleaning will only cosmetically fix, to permanently fix you need to remove the affected timber and or linings. Then prevention is needed, that is provide sufficient ventilation to prevent the the warm moist conditions remaining.

thanks for that, ventilation is hard so i guess shower dome is a possibility.

yeah shower dome seems like a fine idea

Shower Domes are terrible, you can end up with huge quantities of water getting between the shower linings, you don't want that, the resultant repair would be very expensive.

+1 for last night's Fair Go (?) episode at 7:30. Exit Mould just removes the colour so you don't see it, does nothing to the roots which are well embedded in the gib. They recommend warm soap water, because then you can see where it goes and how much is still left. Otherwise replace the gib.

Some years ago I've painted our bathroom with a mould inhibiting paint. Mould never came back in many, many years. Will see if I can track down the brand, think I got it from Bunnings and was one of the cheaper products as we were on a tight budget. It also killed some insects. This was on a 50 year old ceiling and gib of unknown age without proper wet environment sealer undercoat.
