Have just seen one of those "but wait, there's more" TV ads for a great-looking ladder system. Just wondering if they are up to snuff. Has anyone bought one and, if so, is it good quality?

Yep. They are good once you get good and collapsing it. Took me ages to get good at it. I replaced my small 4ft steps with one of them as it gave a tad more flexibility. The best place these work are on sloped surfaces or working up against a wall because one side can be longer. Just feels more comfortable.

My parents gave me one of the Gorilla ladders a couple of years back, I think it is smaller than the transforma, although I'm pretty sure you can get a bigger size too. Between $250 - 300 I think. I love mine, really handy, can be tricky to put up sometimes but nice and compact.
I'm pretty sure I actually saw one of the transforma ladders with it's on display set up in the Mitre10 Mega in Albany. So you might want to check your local Mitre10 Mega see if they have any.

However, although the Gorilla Ladder has similarities, I'm sure it does not have the same versatility.

Yeah and you have to buy the little platform things seperately.

Pretty sure it does everything else though, pulls apart into 2 bits, fold out into one long ladder or with the differnt heights either side.

I have renovated several houses included completely stripping and re-lining walls/floors/ceilings and doing electrical work, plumbing, cabinetry etc.

If these had been around then, I would gladly have paid their asking price - it would have made a huge difference.

I have the gorilla ladder. It is awesome. got it from bunnings for around $250 IIRC.

the only downside is that it is really heavy compared to a normal smallish step ladder (as you would expect, considering the size it opens out to), so if my wife wants to paint a wall or something she makes me move the ladder all the time.

Its not really heavy.... well, subjective I suppose

I carry mine (full size Gorilla multi ladder) around all day everyday, upstairs, inside, outside, heck I even pull it up for use on the roof sometimes (Satellite & Aerial installer)
I only use one arm and Im not a big guy (73kg)

Great ladder though, yes- they don't come with a tray to hold your paint tin, but they don't cost $800 either...
Bailey Ladders do one similar, but that is heavier than the Gorilla (not much though)

. Because it becomes full size, it is heavy relative to a 3 step ladder, which is the size it is mostly used in for us. I carry it around on one arm, but my wife is pretty feeble.

You are going to use this ladder to hold you up, presumably in places where if you fall it would
a) hurt
b) likely cause you damage.

Don't buy a cheap ladder......

I have seen "little giants" used by the fire service around Wellington, - they are costly but obviously they think it is worth it...
