Am I allowed to build a fire pit on my section?

What do I need?

It depends where you live, council restrictions etc ...

Everything you will need to build it can be found here

I have been toying with the idea for a while now

Why not ring the DCC

http://www.dunedin.govt.nz/cd/rural_fires/fire-permits

Or their website for that matter.

"A fire permit must be obtained for any fire in the open at any time of the year in the rural part of Dunedin, as there is a 365-day restricted season in force."

I'm pretty sure the DCC will have restrictions on anything burning in or near the city. I mean... Scarfies...

That page also notes that

Gas brazier

Allowed in any area and during prohibited fire season.

and

Solid fuel brazier

Permit required in rural areas.

Bylaw applies in urban areas.

Banned in prohibited fire season.

So if your fire pit is gas its probably going to be OK, but if its solid fuel ( i.e logs) you are going to face restictions,

Best to call them and have a chat..

I guess burning twigs from the garden for fun counts as solid fuel?

I always find these rules odd.
Because most warehouses sell these

If you only use it at night they will never be able to tell where the smoke is coming from, therefore no permit required :)

Except that the downwind neighbours are likely to be able and willing to help with the location!!

ORC enforce air quality standards, so check out where you fit in relation to this.

I know that in Christchurch, which has had a big problem with air pollution from domestic burners, they rarely send around regional council staff with thermal imaging cameras to spot breaches

Edit: the DCC's role here is more in relation to rural fire, hence they are concerned with the fire aspect of things, whereas ORC is more concerned with smoke.

Friend got a big-ass "gas" outdoor fireplace put in to their house. I dont think it has ever seen gas go thru it and had no problems so far. But that is in suburban auckland.

Actually I think the gas gets used to get the wood going and then is turned off.
