I have a cheap old ventilation system that I've just changed to take air from outside instead of the ceiling cavity. My ceiling cavity is super dusty and has everything you can think of - rat droppings (apparently, very old), wool insulation, fiberglass insulation, cobwebs, treatment for bora, etc. If you're up there for more than 10 minutes every cavity fills with black stuff. The filter needed to be changed too often and it made the house smell a bit. So I changed the ducting to pull air in from the outside. I think it's 140mm ducting. There's no filter in line, just the plastic thing in the eaves that bugs can probably crawl into. I'll put some kind of mesh in there some time but i'll reduce airflow - I may get a booster pump as the system has a relatively small fan/motor.

I'd quite like to get a filter box for it, but when I asked a ventilation company it was going to be around $150 for a simple metal box, not including the filter. Can anyone suggest where to get a filter box and effective filter for a reasonable price? I don't mind a bit of DIY - buying a plastic bin from a hardware store is fine, but not sure I can get the duct to reliably stick to that, or how to fit a filter.

If there's any way to get a draft stopper in there, excellent. Otherwise I might have to look into the sock type units Niel talked about in this thread if I can find them - one for the ventilation system, one for the bathroom, one for the kitchen extractor.

I put in a DIY HRV install based on the avon electric heat exchanger.

Their solution for an inlet filter is made from a large plastic rubbish bin which you attach a spigot at each end.
They provide a large filter sock to go inside. It's pretty expensive for the sock ($90) but so far has lasted me 5+ years without cleaning / replacement. You could probably make the sock yourself.

Thanks Dave. The Avon Electric one is what I'd do myself, I have a system specified just waiting for it to become important enough to spend the money on. I could always order that filter and use a (clean) rubbish bin I have lying around - or would I need their bin with holes cut and everything done for me?

Avon provided the spigots and the sock and the rest was up to me.

The bin I got from from bunnings, i cut a round hole at each end to take the spigots and sealed them in with some flexible sealant and a few small bolts.

Get a bin with a bit of flex in it, some of them (the one i got) used too rigid plastic and wanted to crack.

You could get the spigots from anywhere

i dont think you will find any for this particular design. Avon has a copyright on their install instructions.

PM me and I'll send you a photo of my install. It's a super simple solution.

They're all for heat exchangers... I'd just buy one of them. Thanks for the thought though.

I realize they are heat exchangers, but some ideas for taking a drum and adding ports to connect duct to it, or making a box.  A filter can be as simple as a bag made out of cloth, unless you are after a HEPA filter.

or try Holyoake Industries in Tawa

I've used these guys for loads of stuff too: http://smooth-air.co.nz/product/catalog/DuctFittings*3Spigots*#c1

Carrier in Jarden Mile also stock a bunch of bits too. Little more expensive that smooth-air though, but local

Thanks guys - catalogs are difficult to use when you don't really know what you need, but I can give each place a call for a chat.
