Hi guys,
I need some advice on replacing one of our outdoor lights. The decision I have to make is ether replace like for like, the traditional duel halogen spot lights or with the rapid advancements in LED lights go with one of those.

Now my question what is the light out of a 100w LED v a duel halogen spot.

google search for youtube videos on what you are changing out and what you ware wanting to put in and it will show you the difference.

I got some 20W ones to replace a 500w linear halogen that I was running 200w lamps in because 500w is crazy.

Anyway, it was the "Tradesman" house brand at mitre10 which I cant recall now. $80 or so. And the cable on it was so short it was useless, and when I opened it up to put more cable on, it was so badly terminated that half the strands were not in the terminal. no ferrule on the cable which definatly needed one for the terminals (tiny PCB mount ones) - the other one was fine with its terminiation but really short cable still. I think they may have been returns because the boxes were tatty.

Now they are up, they have a much much wider spread of light than the halogen, and the overall illumination is not as bright, but 10% the power and its still enough so I'm happy enough. Also a better colour as they are 4000k not orange.

But at close to twice the price of ones off ebay for the same thing but in a printed box that has been thru CDB brands its not worth it IMO. I will be just ebaying or aliexpressing the rest when it comes time to do it. At least you can ask them for a meter of cable for a few bucks extra.

Infact this looks exaclty like the cheap mitre10 one, and a hell of a lot cheaper. Still need to see what freight will be and this is warm white, But I can tollerate that for the ones away from the house I dont have to see that often.

I replaced my 3 sets of security lights with LED bulbs.

Each security light had dual PAR38 150 watt bulbs.

I figure that I did not need the vast amount of light or the 300 watts used at each security light.

So I fitted PAR20 7 watt LED lamps.

Plenty of light, Water proof (or water resistant). Same E27 base and the rubber seals around the sockets fitted ok.

I got some 7W ones from bunnings when I was too lazy to change the fitting and they have all failed. They are made in the same glass as an incandesent par38 but the front is glued on instead of welded, so it drops off as sunlight screws the glue up.

So the light output is impressive, I spotted mind the pun this light on Trademe http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=859026145 it's a 100w LED the 50w LEDs are half the price.

The seem okay value as I have to replace the entire light anyway are the olo one has died.

Lol, I saw these from that seller - http://www.trademe.co.nz/home-living/outdoor-garden-conservatory/outdoor-lights/auction-859274162.htm so thought I would chuck $50 on the auction listing for 2 of them since I am in no hurry. Immediatly outbid at $51. Yet now I see a buy now on 2 of them for $49.90 buy now.

I want them with the longer cord which they dont seem to allow for as its trademe so hard to do business on, but this is the first time I have found something like that at a compeditive price on there.

Hi Richard,
That was my thinking too, I saw an auction last night for a 50w LED version, with a $1 start price sell for $36'ish dollars so maybe worth a punt is my thinking. What is the '...longer Cord...' comment I'm wiring mine into the existing household wiring were you running to a plug ?.

No, but if I can spend $6 and get enough cable to get to a j box without having to stuff around opening up the lamp and attaching a longer cord then its money well spent IMO.

I saw the comment in the Trademe auction.

LIGHT COMES WITH 12CM CABLE, SALER ALSO CAN SUPPLY A 1 METER CABLE WITH NZ PULG FOR $6.00 PER EACH LIGHT.

That does sound like a good deal.

I'm looking for a stack of these 20W LED Floodlights too for use at work.

I've been watching the units from that seller, but unfortunately they only have cool white. Ideally I would like 4000K neutral white.

Has anyone bought these yet? How blue are they?

Since I want them for up inside a skylight which have opal diffusers fitted at the bottom, I wondered if I could insert some suitably coloured lighting gel/filter over the floodlights to get a more neutral white out of them.

Anyone got any idea what sort of shade of filter I'd need to convert 6000-7000K cool white into a more neutral white at around 4000K.

Since the lower the Kelvin colour temperature, the less bright the lumens output.... I'm presuming that the cooler white ones are the output of the bare LED emitter, and the neutral white ones just have some sort of filter or phospher integrated into the LED emmitter to warm them up slightly. If that is the case, I'm presuming that I could do the same myself.

Even if the floodlights looked a bit messy after my adaption, no one would ever see the units up there inside the skylights at work... just the light coming out of them. Also since we'd be buying 10 of them, it makes the savings greater, and well worth experiementing with!

Any thoughts on gel shades that might work?

However gels over the lens woud look pretty ugly on my house (unless I could do it really neatly under the glass).... so I would still love to find a similarly priced supply of 20W LED Floodlights with a 4000K neutral white colour at a reasonable price, with a NZ Compliance Statement. If anyone has any ideas?

Electrical Wholsalers want $96 per unit for them... compared to $21 per light form that TradeMe seller when you buy 10.

The trademe ones i got were soooo not nz compliant that I got. Chinese plug on the one with a wire and the terminals in the box were crimped with something hopeless and the side of the terminals had split and exposed the internal metal bit. When I was moving the cable around to sit nice one obviously touched the shell and the rcd tripped.

I guess you do get what you pay for! Were those from the TradeMe seller listed above?

Nice photos.

But at least there wouldn't have been any problems installing them as they came with an NZ Compliance Certificate! ;O)
