Anyone played with Volumio (http://www.volumio.com/)?

I have one on an old B model raspberry Pi I wasn't doing anything with hooked to a USB DAC to a Yamaha Amp that is then powering 6 speakers in stereo at home.

I generally use ZM as a playlist - which is on iHeartRadio.  You can find the stream fairly easily and add it.  But it looked ugly in volumio as they didn't use a standard artist name/song name in the play list.

So I had a hack around today and now have it parsing the track name properly.

Anyway, Was thinking about putting my pi in a bigger case with an LCD screen - then look at pygame as a UI.  For a basic Spotify/Airplay/Web Stream machine.

Ideally I'd like to remove my yamaha app which is pretty big and replace with some sort of amplified speaker switch to independantly control the 3 sets of speakers (and hoping ot add a 4th set).

Would this be a project where I should build an amp with a couple of kit amplifiers, or  does someone know of a reasonably priced product that would do it.  Ideally something shallower that about 350mm as it's in a cupboard.  I know some of the home automation places seem to sell amplified speaker switches, but they seem to be really expensive.

Looks like Volumio is getting a re-write - thanks for the heads up - never heard of this package. Sorry don't have any suggestions for your amp question, but want to keep an eye on this thread!

Cheers.  I've seen a few people using mpd (the player) with a rasp pi LCD screen it looks pretty cool.  Volumio is handy as it's mobile away so you can control it from any where.

What is the Spotify integration like? In terms of searching and viewing/editing your own playlists?

Via both the apps and web UI?

Pretty limited.  It's only any good for playing an existing playlist.  I don't even think you can search.

For me because I can airplay also it's less of a problem.  Hopefully they may do spotify connect, I did see someone trying to reverse engineer it.

cool idea, I assume you can control the same volumio instance from multiple tablets/smartphones etc.  That is the main feature of sonos that I love.  But the second feature (which it cant do currently) is support streaming services.

If they added support for google play music (without having to use a android device as a go between) then I would try it out.  I got rid of all my mp3s years ago :)

Yep - I am in the same boat - pretty much only use Spotify now, so looking for a nice way to interact and play locally - including full Spotify search etc.

Sounds like this may be more you alley then: http://www.woutervanwijk.nl/pimusicbox/

I
mean it's just software, so if someone has written a client you an add it....but more convenient if someone has an entire package set ready to go.

Hmm that new one does TuneIn also.   I'm hoping to get iheart radio on one since I do like the fm radio.  You can pull the stream directly  but integrated would be nice.

Which USB DAC are you using with your setup?

Just some random cheap one off dx.com.  It's better than the onboard and is just feeding into my yamaha amp.

Did you ever get this up and running to play with?   It's pretty clear that you can use airplay to control the device, (eg the apple remote app) however is it possible to use it with airplay speakers as audio outputs?

As in use the Volumio as the source to other speakers?  No, volumio can receive audio only I thnk - same as kodi.

Damn.. back to the drawing board and https://github.com/jasonmc/forked-daapd

FYI Someone in the volumio forums made a massive set of PLS files for web radio stations and uploaded them to github.   Including most of the iheartradio ones.  So if you are still working on getting streaming sorted you might find a premade playlist file there. https://github.com/jprjr/internet-radio-streams
