I'm looking at a thermostat for my radiator system, since I currently only have really basic timed control and no temperature control at all.

I could look at a regular honeywell digital thermostat with a 7 day program.

But One feature I wouldn't mind adding, is the abiity to manually turn the system on remotely.....or more accurately, manually turn the system on from my LAN (the remote bit I can handle myself with a VPN).

Does anyone know of any such thermostat either wifi connected, or ethernet, or would you have to engineer your own lan connectivity?

The interface between the boiler and the current timer is most likely just the timer contacts shorting 2 wires together. So you could probably modify one of those wifi appliance controllers.

I was looking at a Honeywell dt90 about $200 from retailers here. The wifi one I can find for $87 usd....assuming it does centigrade

Would a Nest Thermostat do what you want? They are a bit more pricey mind you.

That seems too smart to me, and I don't like that it's internet connected. I like smart....but I like being able to restrict it to my lan only requiring vpn access to remote in.

Nest - I.e. Google - gives me the willes

To Do what? Be a thermostat or just allow the remote control to an existing one (assuming the existing one has some sort of interface)

I was thinking a raspberry pi would switch the system on/off via a relay. A thermostat would be somewhere after that in the circuit.

What does the current timer turn on/off... a pump, a boiler or a valve? Is there more than one radiator?

I think the current timer turns off the mains power to the boiler...or something to that effect. It's a weird system. I think I'll end up just with a normal programmable thermostat and skip the whole remote access part as too hard.
