Greetings all,

I'm looking at replacing some windows in our lounge with a sliding/stacker door and am keen on hearing your recommendations/advice.

Total size will be approx. 3350w x 2100h, it will be 3-panel (3rd panel is windows), installed in standard 2x4 framed external wall (have council consent already) in our 1960's weatherboard house.

We've just fully re-gibbed the entire house and insulated all walls with PinkBatts R2.8 so we're wanting to get good heat-retention with the new door too - so it will be at least double glazed.

I'm mostly after opinions on: uPVC vs Aluminium, Argon filled vs standard (worth the extra price), and any companies you would recommend (for quality and price).

A mate installed a similar sized one about 18 months ago in Blenheim (basic double glazed) and he swears it cost him around $2,500, but all the quotes we've had (we're Wellington based) for basic double glazed are around the $4,500 mark.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Is Wellington considered a higher wind zone and have any different requirements for window construction?

The wind zone has to be worked out for the site , as it depends on the area. You use NZS3604 to calculate the wind zone.

The draughtsman calculated our property as "Low Wind Zone" - we're up in a valley

That price seems accurate in this market. There is currently a 4-6 week wait for aluminium joinery at the moment. Timber has the best R value in my opinion but I've seen differing studies. Here is a sample of a job I'm pricing at the moment for the best UPVC joinery I have seen in NZ, they come from Germany

Hi Ropata,

when is safety glass required in a bi-fold door please? what triggers the requirement for safety glass? The pane size (sq.m.) I guess, correct? Is there a way to avoid this extra cost maybe by having a vision strip applied? Like an adhesive one, or maybe even etched onto the glass?

All the laws are online somewhere but I'm pretty sure anything close to the ground or wet areas need it. Size of pane is a factor too.
