Update: see information in this reply regarding what the door manufacturer said about this - basically they can't get a barrel that fits any more, and it doesn't affect the gaurantee.

I had my locks changed today to deadlocks, to prevent my toddler escaping. I left a key for them to do the work, I wasn't here. Note that this is a PVC door with multipoint locking.

The replacement locks juts out about 10mm, whereas the previous one was recessed. This looks odd to me especially with different locks side by side. It looks to me to increase the risk of water getting into the door, rusting the components.

Does anyone know if this is good practice? I'm really interested in people who know what they're talking about here.

Note that to save $100 we had only one of the French door locks changed, because you have to open the main one before you can open the second door.

I called a locksmith who said they see it reasonably often, and that they'd avoid doing it, it could rust the workings eventually, but PVC doors can be tricky. So their opinion is it's not great, but it's not awful either.

Not sure I would be overly happy with that.

It is quite common to see them stick out like that, as mine do that too, but you would expect they could have got one to match. Maybe that is all they had on hand, rather than having to make a special trip? But certainly you would want them to match when they are right next to one another, so you have to wonder what they are thinking, as to whether you would be happy or not with the final result. Maybe they will need to change the other one to match.

They made the door, supplied the locks, and knew two weeks in advance they were coming to fit the lock. That's plenty of time to get parts.

I could live with the lock jutting out visually, but the risk of water getting in isn't ideal. They went out of their way to tell me that everything metal needs a coating of silicone spray every six months to protect it from corrosion.

Other than this they've been a good company to deal with.

I'd ask them to change it, mainly because it doesn't match.

Does it hang out the same on the inside?

Tell them to get a Euro Cylinder of the correct length- although you might have to wait for it...

Unfortunately changing the lock on the left hand side would cost at least another $100. They have to remove the glass from the frame, so it's a much bigger job.

No, they're flush on the inside. So the inside looks fine.

The other door they did it just a tiny bit into the inside, and goes out a bit further on the outside. Because of that the water would get in even easier.

How difficult is it to fit one myself?

I have installed something similar before, although it was the Lockwood hardware door fittings which have the oval  lock barrel. With that all you do is unscrew  the tongue plate, and there is then a metal pin underneath that you pull out, which releases the barrel. Then the barrel just pulls out the front. Probably not so easy to pull out the one that is flush. But you probably just want to contact them about it, as it looks like you can get barrels of different depths, and it is the barrel that is keyed which needs a locksmith to adjust.

I would get it changed, it looks like they're banking on you to accept their shady work. Do a google image search and see if its common. I bet you that its not. You can also send the photo to another locksmith and ask for their reply, i'm sure they won't mind, they would probably get a laugh out of it.

The can stick out as it depends on the door thickness. But considering the other one doesn't stick out but this one does, would indicate that a shorter one maybe possible, but maybe not double sided?  Here is a video on one sticking out and how to remove them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5yOrySHqc8

Thanks all. I give them a call tomorrow and ask them about it, show them the photos, and ask if they can get a lock that fits better. If they can't I'll have to decide if it's worth my while to get a locksmith in to replace it - this cost me $99 (unpaid), to get a locksmith in costs $100 callout fee, plus about $50 a lock for three locks, plus maybe a bit of time. Not sure it's worth that much to us, so hopefully they can do a better job of it themselves.

There are different length ones for this reason. And number of pins too. But as you now have to take a key from both sides that will limit how short they can go. Perhaps they just got a 6 pin one and left one pin out tho?

I think that is possibily what has happened, as I suspect the other side either had nothing, or just a snib. Also maybe the latch part wasn't dead centre on the old ones.

The door's 55mm thick, plus the depth of the thing the handle sits on, which means there's 80mm of depth to the door. There is a central core.

I'll call them tomorrow to ask why it's like that.

Have you have had several doors fitted with deadlocks that take the same key?

If the other doors are thicker, that might explain the lock protruding on the thinnest door.
