After 25 odd years with our Fisher and Paykel Gentle Annie we need a new one. Looking for opinions for the different brands?

LG and Samsung has a 10yr warranty on the motor with 2yr warranty. How are Fisher and Paykel nowadays they are a standard 2yr warranty. These are top loaders. Any real strong reason to go for a front loader, my parents are liking the top loaders for ease of loading and unloading the machine cheers.

Edit. LG seems to have the Consumer NZ as the better brand? What about Beko, an appliance repair person said they are good, only front loading but a 5yr warranty.

Another day and another thread on washing machines!

Can I please suggest you do a search on GZ to find the many threads that have covered these over the past couple of years? For example the merits of frontload vs topload has been debated many times, so all that info's there.

Perhaps, once you've read those, come back with specific questions that haven't been answered.

It's not that people aren't willing to share, but sometimes adding to that body of knowledge rather than just repeating it is a better way!

Ah, washing machines.

Having just replaced a 15 year old Fisher and Paykel top loader I've just been through this.

The following 3 made my short list, in no particular order, and all were available through Harvey Norman

1) AEG 6000 Series 8KG Front Loader (#LF6E8431A)

2) LG 9 KG Front loader (#WD1409NCW)

3) Electrolux 9 KG Front Loader (#EWF14933)

All were priced similarly, with about $150 between the cheapest (LG) and most expensive (AEG).

Warranties; All but the AEG have a 10 Years on the motor and 2 on the rest, whereas the AEG has 5 years motor and 5 years the rest.

In the end we went with the Electrolux model. Very much the same features as on the AEG (I was told AEG own Electrolux), but was a good $100 cheaper. The LG was cheaper than the Electrolux, but we (myself and the wife) found that the Electrolux looked better and was easier to use.

We've had it now for just over a month, very quiet, house is a 1970's house with wooden floors, and doesn't shake the place at all, even on the fastest spin (1400)

On personal experience I would avoid Beko. Not a washing machine, but we made the mistake of purchasing a Beko dishwasher & a fridge at the start of the year. Dishwasher has subsequently been refunded and replaced with a Bosch, and fridge is currently waiting parts for repair #2 and will be going down the same path if it has any more trouble. The repair agent have been really good to deal with, but Beko's call centre make it as painful as possible to arrange anything. I get told that overall they're pretty good, but we're 2 from 2 being unreliable so I am only going off this.

Miele. They market theirs to last 20 years but besides the marketing they are an excellent brand for home appliances including washing machine. We bought their twin dos system model few months ago and it’s good. We bought it as a dryer and washer packages together so it was a bit cheaper buying together.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Yes.

Front loaders are more gentle on clothes (tumbling action rather than agitator) - but wash things more effectively than top-loaders.

They use less water, and you'll probably find that you can use 1/2 as much detergent, which saves money and is better for the environment.

Most top loaders have an "add item" button allowing you to open the door and add something part way through the cycle, which was one of the bugbears of early models.

Most have a faster spin cycle, so the clothes are drier when taken out of the machine.

Not having a top that opens means you can fit them under a bench.

Downsides - they're more complex than top-loaders, on maximum spin speed the clothes come out so dry that towels dried on the line can be a bit "crunchy".

The F&P front loaders are excellent, and reasonably priced.

Front loaders normally heat their own water. More efficient if your house has electric hot water, not so good if you have solar or wetback hot water.

If you normally use the drier at the same time as the washing machine. You might overload the wiring to your laundry, if you get a front loader.

Or a Bosch. Similar quality but a lot cheaper. Our Bosch is great. Want it to die so we can get a bigger one to reflect the larger family than we had when we bought it years ago - but it just keeps going. Used twice a day, almost every day!

Frontloader for sure, lot of pro's around it just have a read around.

I have a Fisher & Paykel 8.5 WH8560P2 Frontloader. Bought it 2 years ago but had to store it while moving flats so i got to use a Miele and a Bosch (both FL) but tbh so much happier to have my F&P back. Clothes feels better and having a bigger drumsize at 8.5kg has always been good, plus has good energy & water rating.

While most front loaders do have the capability to heat their own water, many (including my Miele) will let you choose whether to use the hot water input or the internal heating capability.

We've had a Beko front loader for nearly three years now. Hasn't missed a beat (touch wood).

SWMBO prefers it to the Panasonic we'd had for three years previous to that (that we sold to the people moving into our house when we sold it).

I had a Samsung washer/dryer combo I adored but after many bills and ongoing issues, I still did not want to part with it even tho everytime I used it it leaked. A friend moving overseas then gave their brand new F&P front loader to another good friend and they ended up hating it and going back to a top loader. So guess who got the lucky hand me down. Now I hate F&P after they refused to honour a faulty dishwasher (the early dish draws with all the issues) and then for my Mum failed to honour a manufacturing fault on an oven with NO thermostat installed at manufacture. So I was absolutely the last person willing to sing their praises but I was at my wit's end over bills. The damn thing is actually awesome and does huge dog duvets covered in fur, never misses a beat and maybe just maybe is a good machine. Wonders will never cease. 12 months now and I have not managed to kill or break it.
