During level 3 I bought a Black & Decker 900w mains Line Trimmer GL933 for my own very small Fescue & dirt lawn (hopefully soon to be relaid). Then level 4 came along and I've ended up doing my front neighbours lawn and berm for which she usually has a lawn mower man do. Anyway her lawn is mostly Couch with Tall Fescue thrown in. The berm especially is Couch with about an 1" thick matt of it.

I've done her lawns twice. I suppose overall she has about 100 metres of edges & obstacles. The first time it was a bit of a jungle cause her mower man had not come around and it was a bit tough going for my little electric Flymo Chevron 34VC mower. Had to mow twice at different heights. So come round 2 a fortnight later one mow did the trick. However doing the edges was a different story. It took me 1½ reels = 15mtrs of the trimmer line the first time and ran out near the finish on round 2 mow. Both times I tried the 'so called HDL line' and again that just chewed through.

B&D spool 2mm green 10M = $12
B&D lengths HDL blue = $11 (pk10)

This is going to end up like printer ink cartridges.

So my question is: If I keep the empty 2mm spools can I reload them with generic 2mm trimmer line; PowerFit or Oregon from Bunnings or Tuff Cut from SuperCheap Auto, even Warehouse sells KiwiGarden trimmer line ❓

Pick up one of these and then reload it with cheap generic line which works just as well. It'll pay for itself very quickly. I usually just get line from the local Coin Save/$2 shop, and it works just as well as the branded stuff from hardware stores.

Similar to the Juey, the Alex Brushcutter head is a more industrial strength head. They sell line too. Together they work well - I go through probably one of the thicker 30cm lines or two of the thinner 30cm lines every second lawn cut. The line isn't as good as I'd hoped, so I'll try line from M10 before I order more line from there.

i did that on my old electric black and decker line trimmer, i just brought a 50m reel of line and cut it down to the right length for the diameter of my line trimmer and kept it in the little jewy refill tube and cable tied it to the shaft of the line trimmer so i always had some with it.

How fast you go through line depends on how you cut with the line trimmer.

i brought an edger attachment for mine which does the bulk of the heavy work and i just tidy it up with the line trimmer

I sent off an email to Juey:

Does your Juey Trimmer Head H: 80mm D: 50mm Black fit the Black & Decker 900w mains Line Trimmer GL933

Cheers

And got a very quick reply

Hi *****   Unfortunately the Littljuey will not fit this machine.

Kind regards

So I'm back to my original question.

Does this model weed eater automatically feed line every time you start it or by tapping weed eater on ground ?

If it is an auto feed then try to keep it spinning between cuts /passes so it doesn't feed more line than necessary.

otherwise if manual feed are you feeding more line prematurely or unintentionally where line is still long enough to cut ?

So I'm back to my original question.

Oh, sorry, my bad. I thought the Little Juey fit pretty much everything. Sorry for misleading you.

it just sounds like a generic response, you would need to take off the head of the machine and have a look, my one took a little bit of fitting to make work

The little Juey needs a threaded drive to attach to. If the B&D line spool doesn't unscrew it won't be an opttion. In any case the alternate head for the B&D is pretty much the same thing. I'd look at whether the special bits of line with the locating blob could be replicated by ordinary line with a knot.

Alternately tell the neighbour that social distancing rules require you to stay 2m away from her boundaries.

I think I have that model, the line gizmo attached to the shaft is for manual line, I bought a pack of line strips with a plastic thing that goes in that, allowing a no feed strip of line to be used, lasts quite a while

Replacement shaft head gizmos aside (eg little Juey) would just buying generic 2mm trimmer line and winding it on to the empty spool reel be ok and if so what 2mm trimmer line is recommended ??

I do this with my 30ish year old Shindawa petrol weedeater.  Manual feed head that I just refill by winding on line from the bulk packs from Mega.  Comes in a range of thicknesses. I just went for the one that was as close to the original size which is basically the thickest they sell.  I am finding the latest batch seems to "wear out" faster than before so I don't know if they've switched to a softer material or something.  But the wear rate does depend a lot on what you are attacking with it.  Grass to concrete edges are the hardest on it as the concrete just destroys it.  Common mistake I was making initially was to hold the head too close to the grass rather than just the tip of the line touching.

Something like, if you have 10cm of line spooled out and you hold the head 5cm away from the ground, it'll take the outer 5cm off the line pretty fast.  If you hold it at 9.5cm then the tip does the work and you can move it closer as you wear it down.

I guess just pick a brand or supplier to start with and see how their 2mm line works for you.  They'll be fairly similar I'm guessing.

see if you can fit 2.5mm or even 2.7mm in there as it will last a little longer i run 2.7mm in my ryobi as it just fits through the holes with out being too tight.

Thanks guys. Yes I figured the concrete edge was do some of the damage but I'm sure the couch is doing the rest.

We shall see what is available after level 3 or even during demand length of level 3.

I have never bought refills, always rewind from bulk pack. Have commercial trimmers sitting in a shed with heavier gauge line, and various square section and spiral low noise whisper line.

I find little 18v Ryobi brushless (AEG, all Techtronic Industries) with generic round line trims just as well, if not easier and cleaner cut.  Line lasts well, manual bump feed.  Light weight and quiet electric is so much nicer to use.

With your auto feed could be advancing line every time you stop start, try more continuous operation to see if it reduces line use.
