Our DVS has broken down after 15 years. I phoned DVS and they don't provide parts for that model. The guy quoted $2,200 for a new fan. There is still power from the white box in the roof to the control panel in the hallway, so I am pretty sure its just the fan that has died.

Isn't this just a basic 80 watt centrifugal fan? Pretty sure I can get one for a few hundred bucks at Mitre 10 or Bunnings. In fact the guy said, yes, essentially you can do that but would need a sparky to install.

Does anyone have experience with this? is it as simple as I think?

I had a new fan put into an old dumb ventilation system. Cost about $540 for the part and the electrician.

Alternately get a Ming Fans standard or silent fan, plug it into a power socket in the ceiling cavity (it comes with a standard power plug), and control it somehow.

Parent's DVS system went through the same fate 2 years ago after fan died and they also said you need the DVS unit replaced. Cost them $2k I think and they replaced the G3 touch controller with a new wired controller that has small physical buttons and new DVS unit. Reused the existing ducting's and duct grilles that were already setup. Previous system had been running for 12 years.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Hi MileHighKiwi,

My DVS just had a death spasm, not dead but noisy and getting hot. DVS told me over the phone "sounds like the bearings have gone. Cant repair. But a new one, only $2,200". Yeah, Right! I called Mings Fan and looks like they can help so I see them Monday after Level 2 kicks in.

What did you end up doing?

You really need to check out the existing fan, it may not be a basic fan, I brought a DVS branded fan off TradeMe and the fan had a builtin speed controller.

I took my old DVS Unit into Mingfans in Mt Wellington.

He confirmed the bearings were shot, put a new motor/blade into the old housing and “presto”!

Great service. Great price.

It is as simple as you think. I'd be inclined to find a commercial single phase fan (Ming for cheap, Fantech etc for something with a better life). The wiring could be a bit of a pain but a DVS is just a filter, fan and controller.

My DVS started playing up after more than 20 years. Fan stuck due to the bearings being rusted and seized.

I send the unit to MingFan and got superb service with a replacement for a total of less than $350 including overnight courier both ways

He sent back the old unit so I had a look and decided to have a go at fixing the bearings. I got two new 608 sealed ball bearings from RS electronics which cost $25 including courier! Replacement was fairly simple, not needing any special tools although a small sized gear puller would have been an advantage along with small sized circlip pliers but I managed without. Took and hour or two to do the job and I now have a backup unit ( if the Mingfan unit lasts as long as the original I will be in a rest home before I need it!

So DIY $25 instead of $2200 is possible if you are a bit of an engineer

Where are you located? We pulled out the DVS system when we did the Casa de Cowboy rebuild and may still have the fan unit somewhere if you're in Auckland. Caveat: It'll have been outside in a skip for awhile so I'm not sure of the condition.

Hi Mate

It wasn't my intention to start up a DVS repair service for a lot of reasons, more to point out that there are alternatives. It annoys me that that DVS want to charge that much for a fan worth less than 30% of their price (and if you have engineering skills you might be able to repair for 2% or less! )

I think MingFan would be your best bet - I mean $250 plus gst for a new fan dropped in the old housing is a great deal - and they are a long running professional service that can back up the repair.

I guess if you are up against the wall I could look at it and tell you if its a bin it or not, but if I cant repair it, then what...it would still cost half of what MingFan charge for time and materials and with them you have a whole new fan unit

Thanks everyone. We sold the house and the new owner opted for full replacement with new controller etc. Our current house has an old moisture master and when it goes I'll look up Mings. Cheers.
