In my Ford Mondeo 2006 wagon I noticed way more engine noise while driving. When I had a close look, there was a piece of dirty rubber next to my feet. It looks like this part was around the steering column; where it goes into the engine compartment.
I brought it to my mechanic, but he couldn't fix it and recommended to buy a rubber/foam mat and glue that onto the floor.

Not entirely sure as the piece that has come loose seemed to protect the steering column as well.

As the car isn't worth much anymore, I don't want a very expensive solution.

Any tips? It seems the same problem as discussed here.

After some Googling I still don't know what you mean, I find some very weird results about graffiti removal :)

Sorry, that's slang. Google for "silicone gap filler". Get a smallish tube just big enough for your job... the stuff sets in the tube once exposed to air.

Ah thanks, yeah have used silicone before. Not sure that's going to work here though as it has to go around the steering column which is moving?

I assume you mean the steering column has to turn.

Lube (e.g. CRC, oil, KY jelly) up the steering column before applying the silicone around it.

Heh, funny you mention this, because my 2001 Zetec has just done the same thing.

Are you certain it's for the steering column? Mine was the seal around the brake pedal pushrod. Seems to be a common occurrence.

I was trying to find the cause of the noise, thinking it might have been an exhaust leak or something, since the noise was noticeably louder. Then one day I jumped in the car & the rubber/foam seal had fallen into the footwell. What a sticky mess!

On This Link, item no.10 is what you're probably after.

I've only just started looking for part numbers myself. If the prices are stupid, then I'll just put some foam in place without restricting the rod movement.

Thanks! It's indeed the brake pedal! I can see where it has let loose. Indeed it was a sticky mess. Indeed looks like part 10. Will see if I can find it in NZ. If you have found it please let me know.
What a coincidence. Geekzone is awesome.

If it is the brake pedal boot and it is a sticky mess you may have a leaking master cylinder. The sticky mess has to be coming from some where.

Thanks, I think it's fine as there is no visible oil. It's just very sticky rubber.

I did some research and it looks like a common Ford problem.

Car has done 180k km so I think it can be expected it's gone sticky.
Just to be sure, any way I can check it it's leaking?

@Technofreak
No issues there, because the brake booster & master cylinder are located on the LH(passengers) side of the engine bay. There's a massive tube which runs along the engine side of the firewall & transmits the movement from the pedal box to the booster/MC.

It's only sticky because whatever foam/rubber crap the original boot was made from is disintegrating. It's a common thing.

From what @Mehrts has posted there's no way for the master cylinder to leak over the rubber boot.

Sounds like it's a poor quality boot that has perished and gone sticky with age. I would think there's no leak to worry about in this case.

Awesome thanks @Mehrts. I found the item on Ebay, it should also fit my MK3 Ford. However, they don't ship to NZ. YouShop can help though; shipping is around $30-50; I've sent a message how large the parcel would be. Would you be interested in sharing the costs if I order 2?

@Mehrts I just found this video with a guy with exactly the same problem. There seem to be two parts to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLR1rrtRAZs

I'll see if I can find the 2 items in NZ first.
