Hi all,

We need a lockbox so that if am ambulance is required for my wife and I am not home, they can get in.

We saw this https://www.bunnings.co.nz/master-lock-select-access-push-button-key-safe_p4211125?fbclid=IwAR3T_LWgRB80uSVInP0G329BZXTVEwIVkaWAGnOlZxGmcE3W_0FxOQtZpZE and it suits our needs but there are a few reviews saying it is easy to break in to.

I saw this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RSXQsYYso4&ab_channel=LockPickingLawyer

And I think I really need to find something more secure.

I am thinking that the next call should be to the insurance company as I dont want them to decline our insurance if someone breaks in using the key from the lockbox.

We have a RING doorbell but it is not the greatest, I would like something better but that is a conversation for another day.

I know that there is going to be nothing perfect but I would be happier with something more robust.

John

St John sell one. https://buy.stjohn.org.nz/first-aid-products/accessories/miscellaneous/key-safe-original-2-key-lockbox/#Delivery%20Information

What do they do though - keep a record of the combination for your property and tell the crew if they get sent? If so, how about bypassing the lock box, and get a digital front door lock, be it mechanical or electronic.

Thanks for that

I did not think of looking there.

We would have to tell the crew the key code to get in, we are not using the St John's medical alarm but we are a member of St Johns.

The door lock can not easily be converted to a digital / electronic one as it has 7 lock points not just the one like a normal door. I am also going to have to put instructions in the lockbox on how to open the door.

While a little off topic, I am now thoroughly curious about your door! Understand completely if you'd rather not share, but I'd love to know more.

St John can add notes to an address including lockbox codes and info etc, this is then flagged as an alert when the address is given by the caller.

I can't answer for SatTv, but our door has something similar. It locks with a single lock like a normal door, but when you push the handle up bolts slide up into the top of the frame, down into the bottom, and into the wall, pulling the door closed and securing it. It seems pretty secure.

Of course if anyone wants to get in 5 seconds with a hammer through the window or 30 seconds with a crow bar on the weatherboards will do it.

Does it have to be a lockbox?

Stick a key in a pipe of conduit and make it look like a cable coming out the house.

Otherwise hiding these lock boxes out of sight.

Most of the time you put these keypad lock boxes out of sight anyway? (Behind a fence post, on the wall behind a plant, etc)

And that's the thing with even the insecure lock boxes, unless you're worried about Mossad doing Mossad things to you, you're up against guys who rob houses because they can't qualify as Walmart greeters. They're not going to spend a lot of time trying to carefully bypass a lock box, they'll just smash a window and unlatch it. In particular if you hide the lock box so it's not immediately obvious then it will be far from the weakest link in your home security. Remember that most people will have a key not in any kind of lockbox somewhere outside their house and rely on the fact that burglars aren't going to upend everything in the garden in the hope that there's a key under something.

Definetly overthinking it.  Just mount the lockbox in a non obvious position that requires instructions to find if you are concerned someone might pick the lock box.

Sadly we don't have any ware non obvious to put it, there is a gate at the side of the house so the box has to be in the front of the house.

We also dont want to be shagging around with medics who cant find the lock box to get in.

Don't worry, we will get in if we need to, either ourselves or with the help of the water ferries.

Change to an electronic door lock?  You could unlock via mobile or code.

Speaking of water, neighbour used to have a lock box for her place when it was on Book A Bach. We regularly had to apply CRC to it to get a visitor into the place. Try to give it some cover.
