I am renovating my kitchen and have a wall newly plasterboarded. I'll have floor cabinets and wall cabinets to the ceiling. Can I skip joining/stopping the plasterboard and install splashback directly on the plasterboard?

I'm not an expert, but I wouldn't, I would at least prime and paint.

Yea absolutely!

No sense stopping it unless you're going to do a waterproofing layer or something.

Na not for a kitchen splashback. Only behind the likes of a tiled shower or bath area.

I attached my splashback to a painted wall. I just reckon that paint will seal the wall and give the glue a better surface to adhere to. But I don't really know.

Additional question, is GIB aqualine mandatory for the kitchen area?

Yep I'd probably just chuck Aqualine in of I had it available, but I wouldnt go and get a sheet for the sake of it. It's designed to not suck up moisture, so can't be a bad thing in a kitchen bench top area. But it is heavier and harder to work with.

As for painting, just an absolute waste of time. Again, the aqualine is already resistant to moisture, so no need to "seal" anything when it isn't actually a wet area as such.

Some adhesives for tiling and splashbacks specifically say not to stop or paint, the paint can make adhesion worse or even peel away depending on the adhesive being used. We tiles straight onto the boards, just make sure to seal the edges if it's likely to get moisture ingress, much the same as a shower lining, they specifically say to put straight onto the aqualine. Wouldn't bother with aqualine for the kitchen unless you already had it available.
