I've been Googling away but come up empty for anything in NZ!

Maybe they have another name?

Basically 8mm steel stakes, ~300mm long for pinning down erosion control mat. Will need around 150 of them.

Something like this:-

Essentially bent rebar!

I've tried looking for j-pins, ground stakes, steel pins, rebar stakes...

Thanks but need something more heavy duty.

More like this kind of thing:-

I Googled around retaining pins but can't find anything solid enough (8mm diameter).

Buy some rebar and make them.

You would need: -

  • Rebar
  • Vice w anvil
  • Angle grinder.  2kg hammer
  • Safety kit

150 you could make in an afternoon.

Apart from the rebar cut and bend option (which would also be my approach, but I have the tools!), there are a few tent pegs available in 8mm and 10mm - not sure how good they would be?!

For concreting they're called hook starters. Available from M10, Bunnings, ..., but if you only want 300mm ones rather than the rebar-type stuff in the photo they'll be overkill. Weed mat pins would be a better option, but they may be a bit flimsy for erosion control matting.
