Checked out Miter10 I went there over the weekend they have some charcoal one around that. Some more expensive ones might even come down in Christmas / New Years.

I have a charcoal as well as a Weber babyQ.

For the occasional use you are talking about I would not look at the charcoal - they are messy and are more hassle compared to Gas and take longer to get to cooking temp.

I use both - often. For a quick cook, the Baby Q is great. For longer cooks, roasts etc when you have more time the charcoal is the better option.

Up to you. if you want to spend the time with the charcoal the results are great.

Cannot beat a long slow cooked roast pork on the charcoal ;)

Thanks guv. I know the Weber would be better, but my wife just wants a BBQ on xmas, and we might use it once or twice a year. We're not bbq people at all, plus I'm vegetarian, meat works best on BBQ. She was just going to buy those small disposable ones, but I figure spend a little more and be able to cook if in an emergency scenario.

Personally, I don't think being vegetarian means bbqs are any less useful, but I think that depends on, as you say, whether you are "bbq people" or not - so perhaps more about the interest and pleasure in outside cooking and the relaxed vibe of bbqs. For Xmas, for example, we've got bbqs planned for Xmas Eve (family) and Boxing Day (friends) - they create a great casual experience of hanging out on the deck in the sun with a drink... mmm, holiday, deck, drink, food... (apologies to Homer).

I and one of my two kids are vegetarian, and I'm our Weber Family Q is and will remain meat-free - we have my parents' bbq in the shed if we need to cook meat! I think the emergency cooker aspect is a good point, and another reason why spending more to get a Weber or similar can be justified, in that they can be used to cook a really wide range of items. Given you suggest you'll only use it 1-2 times a year then I understand why you're not wanting to spend more - but it could well be that getting a good one may encourage you to use it more; that's certainly been the case with us. Pizzas in a Weber are in a different league to oven-cooked ones...

We don't really like eating or cooking outdoors, that's the main thing. We've had a deck table for 3 years and used it once. We just buy pizza hut pizzas, because with a new baby time is more important than quality.

I think my wife just wants a BBQ because her UK based parents are here (which isn't unusual) and she wants a different xmas experience than home.

My wife doesn't want to spend what would end up being $750 for a Weber, with lid, stand, etc, etc. There are some gas ones around $230 which look good enough, like this Masport or this Gasmate, $280 with a bottle. That seems like good insurance.

I'm trying to convince her it's a good idea to spend $1000 on an emergency generator... the 12 hour outage last week helps (just us - wire to the meter was overloaded).

For your purposes, one of those cheaper/smaller bbqs will surely do the job...

Yeah, a good idea, though one you hope not to have to use that often.

The Kaikoura earthquakes reminded me to try out our inverter generator, which we'd owned for a couple of years but never run. A good time also to find out it had been stolen from the garage! %#$% bastards... unless it was the Sallies when they picked up the stuff we were giving away, and got a bit carried away...

Bugger. Yeah a generator is something that you hope will be a complete waste of money, but if you need it you'd really appreciate it.

I have head good things about the Weber BBQ. Even used one actually at my bosses place one its pretty decent for occasional use (small one)

We have BBQ a bit (at least 2-3 times a week). We have this one. This one has lasted us now about 4 years and still going strong. I like the fact that I can see through the glass how cooked the meat is without lifting the lid don't want to let the heat escape. The gas burner on the side is a bonus.

We've got a Gasmate Cruiser powder coated BBQ

It lives in the garage with the gas bottle when not in use, so not being assaulted by the weather, set it up on the corner of deck (one side of the deck is 1m above the lawn with the way the lawn slopes down) when you want to use it, and away you go.

I cooked up a multi course sitting for 7 adults and 2 kids on one of these a few weekends ago.

Cheaper than a webber as well, Mitre 10 Mega $229
